On schedule, when it says 9/80 or 10/80, what does that mean?

this thread is depressing. everyone work 60 hours a week and one day you wake up and your 65 years old living in the suburbs and are like what the f*** did I do with my life. yeah great you have a comfortable life and probably spend away most of your money.
Age: 37
Career: collecting rental money on 6 properties
hours i typically work averages out to 12. I spent ages 21-33 saving 70 percent of my take home from my bank teller job. I bought my first property at age 25 and the last 5 since the crash. my total mortgage amount equal 4335 including taxes per month. my total take home including 1 month vacancy is 7150. I quit my job 3 years ago and couldnt be happier. living on 2800 a month or 100 a day is pretty easy if you ask me.
married 9 years with 3 kids. wife works 20 hours a week at the library.

We know you're not, Rojo.
But seriously I wondered the same thing.
9/80 means that in a 14 day period you work 10 days and 80 hours - so basically a traditional M-F workweek of 8 hours/day
9/80 means that in a 14 day period you work 9 days and 80 hours - so every other week you get a 3 day weekend by working 8.9 hours per day M-F and M-Th
Typo - the first explanation is 10/80. (10/80 is 5 days per week, 8 hours per day)

I do sales so I am on the road every week meeting with clients and trying to find business. I find long drives relaxing and I get a lot of thinking done (and running too) so I don't consider this working time, although some coworkers do, especially if they are kept away from young families (which I don't have).

(1) I am seemingly unproductive at work - I probably spend 80-120 minutes per day doing personal stuff like emails, travel plans, and web surfing. Without the interruptions from the job my productivity and focus go down - so I rationalize my behavior by saying it's necessary and allows me to be productive while I'm genuinely trying to be productive.
(2) Those are the hours when I'm in the office. When I'm in the field I work a true 50-70 hours per week and usually travel on weekends. I travel 6-12 weeks per year.

I squeeze a nice workout in most lunch hours.
Cool thing about what I do is I work plenty of hours, but it is flexible when I have to be in the office. I never miss any of my kid's events. Bad news is since I own and run the company, I am pretty much always working, so vacations are all working vacations.
Beats working for the man, though.

I see that I've got a pretty good schedule compared to most working folks.

Leave home -- 7:30
Get home ---- 5 to 6
Never, ever bring work home with me, and I could only work 7.5 hours per day if I did a 10/80. All sorts of flexibility in start times. Saving up tons of cash and gives me plenty of time to plan and prepare for other career routes.
Only problem with my work is that I'm at the computer all day, and I feel like I'm slowly dying inside. But that happens to most office workers, right?

I almost never bring home work (average is maybe an hour a month, literally). The stuff I work on is typically not allowed to leave the building, anyway.
Not that you asked, but I would have grossed ~$2,200 last week. That's fairly typical for my English-language jobs; the foreign-language stuff usually pays a few hundred more.
Are you married/have a family? You grossed $2,200 last week? Total? That's 40 per hour.
If I worked those type of hours, I'd hope to make $400 an hour. My estimate is you made $40 an hour. No way I'd work that much for that little.
Trust me, I wasn't bragging--just trying to give more facts.
To answer your questions, I am married with kids; but they're at college, and my wife prefers to spend as little time with me as possible.
On the other hand, contrast is everything. On one of my better temp gigs, say a foreign-language job, I'll make more in a good week than I ever made in a month as a college coach (after decades in that profession). And I don't believe I've ever billed an 80-hour week in the law; as a coach, I hit 80+ hpw (between teaching, office work, conducting/prepping workouts, travel, meets, and recruiting) routinely.
But yeah, document review (recent studies have shown it can be done better by high school students than by law grads), low-stress with no "homework" though it is, is not a particularly munificent line of work.
Except maybe compared to coaching, which--don't get me wrong--has other compensations.

I'm currently a contracted consultant and can only work 40 hours/week. I'd work more if I had to as a salaried employee. Maybe 50 before I'd speak up and design some efficiency.
