So, I coach a fairly talented high school girl (5:20 mile, 11:45 2 mile). She had a pretty good summer mileage-wise, about 35-40 miles per week by the end of it. After a slow start this winter, the last three weeks she's run about 40 miles each week.
My theory, is that rather than slowly increasing the mileage each week (i.e. going from 40 to 42 to 45, etc.) We'd be better off having one big mileage week of say, 50 miles. Then she would return to her normal mileage of 40ish. Is this a good idea? My thinking is that after doing 50 miles, her normal mileage would feel a lot better.
Basically looking for someone to tell me that's either a smart idea or a good way to get her injured.
Thanks!
