In high school, we did about 40 miles a week. Hard workout, tempo, and race each week basically. Finished the season with 4:21 1600m and 9:19 3200m.
My high school training was very weak. We did low mileage and our workouts were accompanied with long rests. A normal week looked like this.
Monday - 1 Mile Warm Up - Workout - Cooldown
Tuesday - Distance Run
Wednesday - 1 Mile Warm Up - Faster Workout - Cooldown
Thursday - Distance Run
Friday - Warm up, striders, cool down.
Saturday - Race Day
Sunday - Nothing.
Amounted to 25 MPW. It got a few of us on our team sub 2:00, and I managed to 4:40 and 9:58 on it. Run more mileage.
