If all the elites and sub-elites run the second day, I can win NY marathon the first day. So cool!
And they should charge a $500 entry fee. Heck if you are going for a money grab do it right!

Let the 2012 people run on Saturday and then do a regular registration for 2013 people who run on Sunday.
Bad idea if you want to promote the sport. For maximum media impact, you need *one* event on *one* day that is the NYC marathon. One of the reasons the Super Bowl is more popular than the World Series is that the Super Bowl is one game on one day.
And it's a bad idea if you have any respect for the people of NYC. You're asking to double the duration of the many closures of PUBLIC streets and bridges. Why do so many here (including the Brojos) think it is no big deal to shut down major streets and bridges in NYC for most of the day?
When I read the postings of many who are in favor of this idea, it's like reading the same people arguing to hold it after Sandy ... all I see is "Me me me me. Me me me mine mine me me."
The Olympics seems to do okay and it isn't a 1-day event. Same thing with the Final Four. Your theory is crap. With that being said, there's zero chance that NYC is going to close down streets for 2 straight days for the marathon.

Clearly the NYC Marathon operated at capacity already prior to 2012.
Runners start getting to the start around 5am with the first start being 9:40am. The last start is 10:20 with an 8 hour time limit (yes, really!!!) and an estimated 10 min that it takes runners to clear the start that has the last official finishers at around 6:30pm, or right around dusk.
So yes, two days would be the only option if you want to increase the field.
Or get rid off all the penguins.
Clearly? Clearly not to you. The 2012 NYCM was going to be larger than the 2011 one (and all others) so the earlier ones were not operating at capacity.
NYRR would do it if you agreeed to run them one after another. You buy a 2013 bib. When you get to the finish line you get your 2012 bib and get to experience the course backward in a race to get Staten Island before the course closing time.

It's named the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge now.
Tee hee. He said Koch.

Mostly wrong.
5 am buses are for tourists and idiots. Most of us catch the and ferry and take the free shuttle bus to the start.
Ignore what the Road Runners tell you. Both the ferry and the shuttle bus won't cost you a penny.
The last wave starts at 10:55 am, not 10:20.
So about 45 minutes after the last guy crosses the start line the winner will be smelling the finish line I'd say that close to maxed out numberswise.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
