This is a post from 2009 Footlocker National Qualifier Avery Clifton on the Facebook page 'Let 'Em Run: Kansas Girls for 5K':
I qualified for Footlocker Nationals in 2009, and I can say that it would have been very beneficial to have run 5k races all season leading up to it. A 5k is a totally different race from a 4k; it has a different rhythm and I had become so accustomed to 4k that at the regional meet for Footlocker, 5k was somewhat of a shock to my system. The majority of the girls that placed ahead of me did run 5k in their regular season meets and they didn't have to prepare for a longer race leading up to Footlocker. The national meet was only my second 5k cross race and I believe I could have placed higher and been more competitive if I would have had a whole season of practice with 5k races behind me. It would also help the transition to the college race distance of 6k - one kilometer less of added race distance to get used to.
