Just to emphasize what others have said, THERE IS NO BEST DOG BREED.
Dogs are amazingly variable in temperament, size, energy level, and ability to be trained. You need to try to pick a dog that is suitable to your lifestyle (amount of space, time you can spend with the dog, kids, etc.) and ability (eg, don't get a big, energetic dominant dog if you have no idea how to train it). People sometimes fall in love with a dog or a breed of dogs and are unrealistic about whether they can be a good owner for that particular dog.
And remember that they don't stay puppies or even healthy adults for their whole lives. You will outlive the dog and you need to be ready to be a responsible owner even when they are old, slow and gimpy.
If you have a breed in mind, try to spend some time around them first, and talk to other owners to understand what you might be getting into. Check out your local breed rescue groups.
I would also not necessarily get hung up on a particular recognized AKC breed either. There are lots of good mixed breed dogs out there - more than there are potential owners - just pick one that is suitable to you and your family.
