I'll be running xc next year as a freshman. What time did you get in your first race (5K)? And how old were you (frosh, soph...)? I'm just wondering what i should aim for, since it'll be my first season.

My first XC race was my jr. year. I ran track since 7th grade so running wasn't foreign to me.
But it was a train wreck.
18:25 5k
7 years old
19:43 5K
18:45 - 9th grade after 1 week of running. Beat 1 guy on our very large team. Was top JV by the end of the season, running low 17's. Ended up low 15's by my senior year, which in 1981 in Wisconsin with Hackers, Stinzis, Jenkins etc. Got my about 20th place. Damn fine runners that year.
16:55 2 mile in 7th grade after 1 week of running. Somehow a month later on 2 occasions I ran in the 13:40's.
First XC 5k as freshman in high school- 18:04, ended season at 17:07.
18:30 5k. Don't worry about times at the start of the season.
21:40 for 3 miles freshman year.
Got it down to 16:56 by senior year and then 4:43 for the mile.
Played football for two years, first race was Jr. year and ran a 15:29
18:14 5k as a sophomore, ran track as a frosh though so wasn't completely new to running
My first XC race as a freshman I ran 18+ minutes for a 3k. I ran 22:15ish for 3 miles for my last race that season. I ran 15:36 at Mt. SAC as a senior.
began running sophomore year after running the mile in Gym in 6:19 ran 19:45 that year..
By my senior year I ran 15:58. hardwork is all it took because obviously I do not have much talent
10:58 2k time trial as a freshman!!! =D
It's okay. I dropped to a 4:39 mile as a senior.
Not a dbag like you wrote:

Your whole team ran faster than 18:45 in their first meet of the year? You should probably point out that it was a 3-mile. But even so, that is an exceptional team. Our team was not that big (about 25 boys) and an 18:45 3-mile would have put you near the top of JV in a summer XC race.
I am a little younger than you, but was a frosh in 1981 and by the next year our whole varsity was between 15:40-16:22 and this was on a legit course with some hills (and 5k).
Also, there was only ONE Hacker and Stintzi brother competing in 1981 in the State Meet.
19:12 5k as a sophomore. Had one season of track behind me for running experience. Now I've brought that down to a 16:43, and hopefully will bring it down much lower within the next few months.
I ran a 19:09 on a muddy day as a freshman. Was running 17:30ish midway through the season. Never ran in the summer or off season I guess. Ran low 16's as a senior. Didn't run in college. Ran 16 flat 5k on a really hot day as a 26 yr old while training for a marathon.
I couldn't find my first race time, but my second race I ran 20:52. My slowest time of the season I believe was 23:12. I was a sophomore and had been running since track season the previous spring.
started freshman year with 15:07 2.5 mile at an invite and then 18:10 3 mile in first league meet after running a 19:10 time trial 2 weeks earlier on the same course. ended up running 17:50 5k by the end of the year. was usually 2-3rd man on the jv.
ended up running 16:00 for 5k (argh) with comparatively weak 4:27 1600pr. did not run in college.
18:20 something for freshman year. I got down to the 16:30s by the end of the season though.
20:01
I easily broke 15:00 my first race as a freshman. Then again, we ran 2 miles when I was in HS.
