I signed my son up for a summer rec season track and ended up as a volunteer distance coach. He is going into 7th grade and has run middle school cc since 5th grade but never ran track. His weakness is short speed and I wanted him to work on the shorter races to build confidence but really he has not yet gone thru puberty so does it even matter yet?. He will be running the 400-800-1600 and maybe a field event each week. It is a six week season and he has made some friends already and is having a blast. I am unsure how this will play out for cross country as he is losing time he could be building a base but what the heck - he is 12. Prior to this league he has been running 5 times per week for runs between 30 and 55 minutes but it was getting stale. He will be doing informal weekly team runs with the cc team starting in July and is looking forward to that. Anybody have any experience with programs like this? I ran in HS and D1 College, but didn't run track or cc at all until freshman year and frankly most of the age groupers I saw ended up hating the sport or injured by the time they were hs juniors. As such, I was wary of programs like this - even though I did run jr olympics meets unattached in the summer. His cc coach may not be on board with this as well and we are running with cross town future rivals! I am just trying to keep this fun and mix it up... Any thoughts? Despite enjoying coaching the kids (we have close to 70 - mostly sprinters) my gut is uneasy with this type of program so close to the season and feel like I am circumventing or cheating on the cc coach 's master plan...
