Hey, so I'm coaching a HS XC team and the dedicated runners took 1-2 weeks off after track and got right into the base building. I'm curious about knowing when your runners are doing too much mileage, pushing themselves too far over the edge. How do you know if a runner is doing too much and will come into fall tired and burnt out, instead of fresh and ready to run fast?
I'm telling my runners to tell me how they feel about their running everyday, any signs of fatigue, injury, or de-motivation, but there's none. I'm just concerned that a runner will average 60-70 mpw in the summer and be tired by fall, instead of running say 45-55 and be fresh in the fall. But I don't want to rob them of potential fitness gains.
Here's my top 5:
1. Sr, 4:38/9:40/16:05, building to 80 mpw
2. So, 4:33/10:04/16:35, bulding to 60 mpw
3. So, 4:46/10:10/16:47, building to 60 mpw
4. Jr, 4:50/10:10/16:55, building to 70-75 mpw
5. Jr, 5:02/10:34/17:02, building to 70-75 mpw.
