I am surprised to see Mudd in the 800 vs. 1500. I realize he's only a frosh, but seems to have more spotential in the 1500. Any thoughts from the Wisco folks?

A couple of pure guesses (although Nutty might have commented on the choice in his presser Monday.
Well, they have two contenders in the 1500, and with Zack not having a great season, running the 800 keeps him from competing with his team. Also, it is hot down in Austin and Mudd is not a small guy, so heat would be less of an issue. In addition, he ran the 800 at Big Tens, so maybe that was the plan and workouts the last several weeks went in that direction.
In his Flotrack interview, Mudd says he'll be running the 1500 for World Juniors. They decided to do the 8 for NCAAs because he was more comfortable with it. Don't forget, he's only run about 5 1500s in his life.
he was the number 1 800 runner in the nation last year (high school) with ease. The mile/16/15 he was top 5 for sure but uncertain to say. WHy does this surprise you?
just the fella you think it is wrote:

In the interest of accurary:
T&F News had him rated as #2 behind O'Neal Wanliss.
He did have the fastest time, about 1/2 second faster than Immanuel Hutchinson.

He was clearly #2 in the mile behind Lukas. His mile and his 800 were pretty similar in high school, but he was focused on the 800 most of the year and suddenly dropped massive time in the mile at the end of the year. He definitely has a higher ceiling in the 1500
