This is my first year out of college and coaching. i work many of the meets my hs team attends. Ive tried the method of handing out medals at the scoring table where "they can be picked up after the top x have been announced". this only leads to a free for all to disturb whoever is writing down the results and keeping score of the total team points. you will have kids keep coming and asking for medals when you do not have the results yet in your hand or you will get that one coach who swears he/she MUST get a medal the instant a race is completed. today we tried the method of giving out medals at the line. It worked well for distance events and events that did not have multiple heats. Kids refuse to wait around to see who breaks in to the top spots from slower heats. It was annoying hunting down kids to give them their medals and it was disrespectful having coaches give me an attitude because they swore their kids should have gotten a medal. any ideas on medal distribution methods for hand-timed meets that would minimize any faults or demands for undeserving medals by loose screw coaches and kids? on top of that, the majory of officials are retired old people who are miserable at what they do so the coaches use me as a scapegoat to get mad at over mishaps. i dont want to let a few nasty officials and coaches stop me from coaching. please give me your ideas letsrun!
