He is a marathoner who should be racing marathons. AlSal should recognize this.

I don't know. His 2 mile, 5k and 10k American records speak otherwise.
please no excuses for rupp he just got owned like i said before the race
and al sal was running around the convention center like some freakshow, he knew what was coming
rupp tried to execute a plan and take it out and it just did not work
that last 300 from lagat was a thing of beauty to see in person
People have good races and bad races. Rupp was essentially 25 seconds slower, more or less, than in his 2 mile record. At first, I thought maybe he'd look to hit it hard with about a mile to go. No, he just had a really bad night.
Have you ever thought you were in really good shape, really ready to go, then the gun goes off and you are just really NOT in the zone? This is what happened to Rupp.
Kudos to Lagat for a rocket last 200. At the worlds, if I was running against Lagat, I'd try for a sub 7:30 pace as a good strategy to beat him.
With Rupp's consistency, he probably won't have another bad race for years. He's clearly fit after the 2-mile AR. Nothing concerning about this race.

Which 5k American record would that be?
Umm, his 5k indoor American record which held up for about one year.

And no longer owns.
He's afraid to kick like a "freak of nature". So he pussed out.
I think 99% of us would love if that was our "zombie" pace. Sometimes people have off days. You never know what altitude will do to you. He ran the last couple laps really slow that is altitude right there. It hits you like a bat out of hell!
Too many excuses for Rupp. He lost to superior runners. Losing will happen to him more than his fans are willing to accept.
I know what happen. He got his a** whooped. Plain and simple. It happens. Even among the great ones for example (bekele in edinburge). Rupp is just not at that level at. I know it's really difficult for his fanboys to comprehend this but it's true. Time to face reality
He had a bad race. Could have been asthma, but I can't imagine that altitude would be a factor, Albuquerque really isn't THAT high. But then again I went to a school up in the clouds.

really, what happened was that he had a bad race. Happens.

Exactly. We are here talking about him. I doubt he ever really talks about us. Do you?
One bad race does not make you a bad runner
He led for more than 2/3 of the race. Rookie mistake. He's expending substantially more energy by leading regardless of the pace. It's no surprise that he got absolutely torched.
So few of you understand, that you can't race at the caliber Rupp does all the time. tonight he just wasn't feeling it. sometimes you'll get out there and just feel like shit. Haven't you all had that race during XC or track season, where one week you'll run a PR then a week or two later you just bomb, then you come back again and you run another PR. This is what happens. People get tired, racing is not easy, some days you get out there, and it's just like screw it I don't wanna hurt this bad today.
It seems no one on letsrun has ever failed mentally in a race before.
Wow...this borders on Galen Rupp pornography. I don't think his mothers makes this many excuses.
Here's the deal...Rupp is the best white American we've had in the Kenyan era, but is still a level behind the world's best. Can he make it to that next level...I hope so, I don't wish him ill. But until he does it in an international race, then let's keep rooting and acknowledge that, as of now, he still has a 50/50 chance to make the olympic 5000m finals much less medal.
This is like everyone worshipping Pre even though he didn't win crap (and as far as the world is concerned, NCAA titles don't count).
How many of you have PR'd let alone set a national record with a head cold? That's what Rupp did in the 2 mile. It took a lot out of him and I had a feeling he wasn't going to be sharp this time. I've been able to race after just coming down with a cold (but never a PR let alone any records), but it always caught up to me and my running would be sub-par for a couple weeks after. Don't tell me no one can relate. It happens to all of us. I know Lagat was suffering from a cold at the 2008 Olympics when he failed to make the finals in the 1500 and only got 9th in the 5000.
