Are you serious about the 13 min 10k? If the 100m WR pace was held for 10k the athlete would finish in 16:18. So in order break the 13 min barrier all records from 60m through 10k would have to be broken in the same race.

Yep, that's strong evidence that a 16:40 is possible.
Was the word target or goal used anywhere in that post? - and no I dont think its one of his goals to beat them - I think it is probably to beat guys better than them and by virtue of that he will probably beat them too.
Any more stupid comments to come from the "Hand of God"? or maybe an admission to a rehab centre for cocaine abuse would be better.
Not a stupid post at all! I stand by every word.
Why are you focusing on Mottram? Please, I'd love to know, I really would.
I suspect its because you see todays top athletes as otherworldy and look for common attributes. The most common attributes amongst the world best is the same as it ever was - hard-working, determination, incentives, environment and mental fortitude.
I don't want this thread to slip into another 'is it/isn't it genetics?' thread but for you own sake don't be so friggin defeatist!
Okay, since none of the other posters has the balls to say it. I've got to call bullshit. Just because a person is a Kenyan or Ethiopian he is beyond reproach for drugs. I can't and don't believe that. Look at Lagat, and Sief, gosh their times aren't as good as a couple of years ago. A couple of years ago when they BOTH failed drug tests.
Renato,
Does the Ethiopian runners train different than the kenyans?
Why is the ethiopians so good in the final sprints compare to kenyans?
Nice to see you here again!
They got greater aerobic capacity and can save their anaerobic capacity longer, they aren't faster if you talk about pure speed.

With Ali Said-Sief you are correct but about Lagat you are being stupid.
Lagat did not fail his test. Please, check your facts and accuracy and do not malign innocent people.
Lagat is only in the beginning of his season. He has the Olympics in months; he should not be running very fast right now. And he won his first ever Golden League meeting.
He is as consistent as ever was.
A.) Ethiopia has a nationalized program. Anybody who is talented and selected to run for the national team is either coached by Kostre or Berta, or by coaches that received their coaching education from them -- so everyone is running the same program (with the exception of their 800/1500 runner who runs for de Olivieria). People wonder why the Ethiopians are cleaning up at World Cross -- because they all have the same coach and can make coordinated efforts. It's not as if Bob K. and the rest of the American squade had all been training together for fitness and tactics specifically for a coordinated effort at World Cross. Just about everyone else shows up at the start, all with their own coach and plan and runs their own race.
B.) Their training isn't designed to destroy them. Yes, tough workouts will be tough but most of their running isn't blistering. Geb's schedule from 2001 went something like this:
MONDAY: 3hr (32mi) long run in the forrest (5:40/mi)
TUESDAY: AM 20x400m hills PM 1hr easy
WEDNESDAY: AM 1hr30m PM 1hr easy
THURSDAY: AM Hard 15-30km on the roads (4:30-4:50/mi [HM-MThon pace) PM 1hr easy
FRIDAY: AM Sprint work (16x60m in spikes on the track) PM 1hr easy
SATURDAY: AM Specific track work as needed PM 1hr easy
SUNDAY AM 1hr very easy PM no run
C.) Kenyans by contrast, are coached by whomever and all have their individual goals. Some train in Kenya, some in Europe, some in America and they all come from different backgrounds. Then they've got to race hard 6 weeks out from the big race to make the Kenyan team, and then the Kenyan coaches spend the next 6 weeks beating the shit out of their runners to make them faster, when they are really sucking the race right out of them. Imagine if you were a college athlete and everyone at your school all ran for different coaches with different philosophies and goals. Then 6 weeks before NCAAs you ahve got to qualify for the team and then your college coach interrupts your regular training and hammers you hard for the next six weeks, at the end of which you have to go race. It's not a good system, is it?
One question, where did Dr. Kostre receive his initial training and coaching experience? Oh yeah, East Germany, and we know that there system strictly took the best athletes. Hence, they never needed to resort to doping. And yes Lagat did fail a drug test, I would suggest you do a little research before posting.
Lagat DID NOT FAIL A DRUG TEST.
A test requires an A and a B sample to be tested.
You are the one who needs to do a little research before posting.

Wrong. Kostre was educated in Hungary. And Charlie Francis was educated in Canada, so...
Ethiopia was a ruled by Communist dictatorship -- Kostre could only go to university in so many locations. To say that a coach educated in a Communist backed country is guilty is guilt by the most vague association. Where would you have like him to go to school?
How many coaches in America and other parts of the world use the "Hungarian Tables"? Are they dopers as well?
Is it fair to say any sprinter who study in the USA is guilty of using drugs from Balco

Good question????????
and he coached within the east germany system.
and when did he coach/receive his training? oh, it was in the 70's at the height of eastern bloc doping. kinda odd how that happens.
How to destroy a World Class thread, have World Class banal idiots trash it
I certainly don't know why Renato Canova bothers on occasions.

Note what I posted: "It seems impossible that a human could ever run under 13 minutes for 10k..." The second part of the statement was only to recognize the possibility, however remote it is.
And, just to be completely accurate, the world record that we should be dealing with for purposes of comparison is the 200m, not the 100m.
19.32 * 50 -> ~16:06.
But no, I do not think that this will ever be achieved.
This thread died long, long ago.
It's not dead as long as you keep posting on it.
