To keep it simple, I'm talking about:
1. the electrical/solar/fossil energy to power your house: electronics, water heater, appliances, lights, etc.
2. The energy used to power your car (whether gasoline, ethanol, electric, or some mix of those)

hmmmm, lets see, restricting my ability to travel by 30% when I already pretty much only drive to work, college, and the grocery store, and cutting down on my home power consumption means getting rid of electronics and having a cold ass house. For one year at the end of my life? No thanks.[quote]e2

Yes, there's no possible way to cut energy use otherwise. Has it occurred to you also that cutting energy use 30% will give you more money to enjoy life?
for 1 year? Probably not, if I'm very old at that point.

There is no possible way I could cut 30% of my energy consumption and I'd be really surprised if I could cut it by 10%. I have a small condo in a "green" complex with all energy efficent appliances, windows and led lighting. I take short showers, start the dishwasher twice a week and do laundry once, letting most of my clothing dry on hangers. I don't watch tv, I've never turned my heat on (in new england) as i use only a small radiant heat space heater. I own a small 4 cyl car and drive 12 miles to work each way (highway so bike to work is not an option) the grocery store/farmers market is the only other trip the car sees. I change my oil every 10k miles, run 45 psi in my tires and hypermill. I walk or ride everywhere else. The only electronics I use are a laptop and a cell phone. I have plenty of money so its not like I live like this to survive I just don't really like to be wasteful. I don't buy junk from china and try to limit purchases to bulk packs and family sizes to cut down on waste. I have a great recycling system at the condo which makes it super easy. I also oppose Obama and leftist ideology so obviously I'm a hateful, bigoted, homophobic, suv driving, war mongering, blood for oil, polluting, closed minded, redneck, bible thumping, idiot republican. Even though I've been a registered libertarian for 9 years. Just for an extra year to live with a bunch of know it all hypocrite statists trying to control my life, f#%k that.
Can we just rename the message boards, "Would you rather....?"

Well at least you're enjoying yourself.

Do you really think this is the only way to decrease your energy consumption? If so, perhaps you should stay in your cave until you can read.
I'm in! I'll endure hardships like walking 10 miles to work and living in a cold house in the winter and hot house in the summer. Meanwhile, Michelle Obama will use as much energy as I use in a year when she flies to Aspen for another vacation. Let's all subsidize the uber rich's private jets.

It sucks that 10 miles is obviously too far to bike. Or that sweaters don't exist where you live.
