Did anybody see Ned Willig and Zavon Watkins in the junior 1000m at the armory last night? They both ran 2:22 (Willig won) but got DQed for cutting in too early

This needs more attention...this is a big deal. Two HS runners went 2:22...one .08 from Robbie Andrews record. All 3 faster than Webb.
There is some sick 800/mile potential from these guys. 2:22 is no joke, and the 2:23 guy is a Jr. i believe.
Willig is absolutely no joke. Set the PA indoor 800 record recently and ran 4:15 indoors, all after a strong xc season. He's gonna have a great outdoor season. And he's going to Brown next year, I believe.
Wiilig's dad was the NY state HS inddor mile champ and was runner-up in the same event outdoors, so Ned has a good pedigree.
Not to burst the bubble being blown here, but the reason they got DQ'd was that THEY DIDN'T RUN THE FULL DISTANCE. In a boneheaded move Watkins cut in a full turn early and drew Willig and the rest of the outside alley with him. Probably ran about 992m. Then of course Watkins damn near elbowed Willig into the stands at the finish. Trashy behavior from a talented kid. Malone ran well for a soph record of 2:23 and deserves praise. Willig was somewhat a victim of circumstance and will be a force to be reckoned with.
Even with all the mistakes it was fun to watch.

Ran well?? Lol....
And is he a soph or jr?
2:23 warrants "lol"? OK, he ran fantastic.Corrected- it was a jr class record, second only to Andrews overall and ahead of Webb. It looks like Malone held out his hands after the field merged like "WTF??" since Watkins and the others cut in front.

This was a fantastic race! A shame about the DQs but the rules are the rules. Strymar Livingston broke his own national record in the 600 meters running 1:17.58. I am hoping to see him vs. Watkins, Willig and Malone in the 800 at nationals, it would be a real battle. Mary Cain ran a national soph record in the girls 1000(2:47.29)and looked very comfortable in the process. She is set for a big showdown with Sam Nadel at the Millrose games in NYC this sat. night. They could make a run at a sub 4:40.
I'm from the same District as Ned Willig and ran against him in at least 1 tri-meet and at Districts once. During the XC district race my junior year (his freshman year) at Lehigh University he ran 15:55.
He was very small, and has grown a TON since freshman year.
