You are tough, brave, and honest, three things I think most of us here wish we were more than we actually are.
Please wear out those Vomeros. I'll see that you get another pair.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Steroids, huh?
Just what we need, another drugged up athlete.
I hope they have drug testing at this 5K you are preparing for.
You ought to be banned from running.
Wow, this is tough to read, you're very brave and inspiring CG. I will be running the New York City marathon and will be thinking of you throughout the entire run. You are my motivation. Thank you for your bravery and for posting.

Yeah, go figure, they won't even give me EPO! What kind of a system is this...
Got in 2 today. Was super slow, but, did it. Like an hour. Just hobbling along. Thinking of switching to the pool. My ankles just kill me.
I'm not good at saying things (as is probably evident in this thread) but eberytime I see you get out there and just keep on hammering I am in awe.
Just. Wow.

Like Flo'da boy, I don't feel I can adequately express my admiration for you. While most runners choose to run, the true runner must run; you, CG, are the embodiment of the true runner. Please know that there is a whole community of those who care and are listening, even if we're not so communicative about it. God bless you and your family.
As if the cancer wasn't enough, now your ankles are trying to take you out, too. haha. Getting in an hour is PHENOMENAL! Keep kicking ass, CG!
The doc said it's time to get a cane. And walking is "dumb". Hmmm. Well, that makes things a little tricky. Guess I'll take to the pool.
My Dad has metastatic prostate cancer and is having a rough time lately. I have to say that coming on here and reading about your determination gives me more strength to keep encouraging him. He is in pain from bone mets and he is starting to walk in a pool, which takes off so much pressure, and therefore pain.
Best wishes to you and your family.

I am not sure the cane will help much in the pool.
Seriously, let me add my admiration for you in sharing your journey with us. You truly are one who will be running through the tape.
The ankle pain is fairly new. Only started about 2 weeks ago, so, I am still figuring that out. When my pain meds are in full effect I can walk fine, but, first thing in the morning, I really hobble a lot. I hope it's not a sign of something more serious...stress fractures in the bones or things like that. A wheel chair/scooter would be hard for me to swallow. I am trying to stay off my feet as much as possible hoping that will get them to chill out. But, switching to the pool will be good. Probably better for my "full body" fitness than the current walking routine. Plus, walking 30 minute miles on bad ankles is just bad business. Given a few weeks of pool work and rest maybe the feet will chill out. I can hope anyway. Back to my regularly scheduled programming of a transfusion so early this Friday morning.
I had a really cool weekend I thought I should share. A few months ago I got connected with Ken Martin, the steeplechaser turned marathoner, via email. He himself is also fighting cancer, but, has been working towards developing a fund to help researchers explore the relationship between exercise physiology and oncology. This past weekend he came down to Dallas, where I live, to connect with one of his sponsors for the fund and Aaron Ramirez (the '92 10k Olympian among other accolades).
Ken is also working towards an attempt at the over 50 mile world record later this year and did a workout on Saturday towards that goal. Weldon came out as well to interview Ken about his fund. We all talked and had a great time, but, here's are some crazy parts. I actually reached out to Ken in the early 90's for coaching because I didn't think my high school coach knew what he was doing. Being as I was still in high school he turned me down, but, 20 years later we crossed paths again.
Another weird coincidence... I drew a picture of Aaron from a 1990's issue of Runner's World for a race in one of my high school art classes. Here's the link to the picture. Be nice, I was 13:

; Aaron was the #6. I thought, for a while, the guy behind him was in fact Ken, but, it turned out to be someone else. Now, what are the chances I would randomly pick this guy to draw a picture of and 20+ years later he shows up at my house to hang out with an old training buddy?
Just all sorts of weird coincidences. I don't know what the right words are to describe all this, but, it was just a really cool weekend getting to meet these guys and hang out. We had fun talking about exercise physiology, cancer research, training, kids, etc. Just one of those rare moments running has afforded me. I don't know of a lot of other folks who have things like this happen to them, but, I really find when they do happen they are just so neat. Okay, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. : )
Awesome stuff CG! Glad you had a great/unique weekend. Sounds much more interesting than mine was, and....I'm slightly jealous ;)
What a great meeting, CG! Nice blog entry on this one, too.
"Illegitimi non carborandum" as they say....in this case, the "illegitimi" being cancer, of course.
1 walk
you're in my thoughts CG
Keep after it, CG. Strong work!

Awesome cancer guy! Don't bump your mileage up too quick ;)
How are the ankles?
