Please don't read any further and definitely don't comment unless you are from Iowa or Nebraska. I have lived in both states and probably always will live in one or the other. Today on the way home from Living History Farms I kept thinking about the difference in the quality of running between the two similar states. I'm not playing favorites just pointing out the differences.
Iowa has six OT qualifiers in the marathon. Nebraska isn't even close to having one.
Iowa has some of the best races in the Midwest - Bix 7, Dam to Dam, Living History Farms, the Drake Relays. Not much in Nebraska besides a few couple decent sized races with slow times for the winners.
Lisa Koll and Jennie Barringer are native Iowans. No Nebraskans are even close to being similar.
Iowa State usually has something in cross country. Nebraska doesn't. Even the DIII schools in Iowa consistently own the Nebraska schools.
Even the high schools in Iowa are consistently better than Nebraska - the Flood sisters and the Houllihan are recent examples.
How can two states with similar demographics and similar geography be worlds apart when it comes to distance running?
