Wait Meb's PR is 5 min slower than Hall's.
Damn straight Hall's no Meb.
If Hall is 47th what is Meb?

Well, 3 minutes in the real world.
Bottom line is that Hersh is less than professional while both Hall and Meb are both very impressive professionals.

With all the crap Hall gets on here you would think the guy sucked and finished well beaten all the time.
Actually, "with all the crap that Hall gets on here" you would think he was one hell of a marathoner. If he "sucked and finished well beaten all the time" nobody would give a crap and nobody would bother giving him a hard time on here.

Flagpole wrote:That's fine if that's the point Hersh was making, but he was praising Meb for his PR. Gonna do that, then you HAVE to look at Hall's times, and on his best days, Hall DESTROYS Meb in the half marathon on up.What's their head-to-head record? I'd be very interested in seeing that.
If you're looking for consistency in standards for praise and/or criticism, I think you're being too generous to Hersh.
Well, I don't mean to be generous. I think that COMMENT that should have been a QUESTION was ridiculous. Just bad journalism. Would have been good perhaps for Hall not to have said that, but then Hersh should have challenged him with a QUESTION, NOT a COMMENT.

Well, he is.
Here's a grand idea: Ignore the idiot and move on. I've never heard of Hersh before Chicago, he clearly has nothing to contribute to our sport, so just leave him out of it and he'll fade from our memories.
Hall ran a 2:04:58 on a "relatively slow" Boston course and got in the top 5 at Chicago. He's going to sh*t on Meb at the trials
Hall's reply to Hersh was a classic: "Doesn't mean that much to you apparently." Not even delivered in a mean or sarcastic way. Just clearly pointed out what an ass Hersh is.
And now Hersh shows he's still pissed about Hall's response with his comments about Meb. That's funnier yet.
Hey, Phil - both Hall and Meb are great, courageous runners. There's no fight here. Whereas you are a dick.

Pretty sure it's:
Hall - 1
Hersh - 0
Hall is relevant.
Hersch is irrelevant.

Agreed.
I thought the article was well written and he hits on a lot of great points. The fan boys on here love Hall and love to hype him up. The fact is he was only 47th fastest marathoner this year, his Boston time doesn't count because it was downhill and wind aided. 47th! You would think on this site that he is top 5 the way people hype him up. He was yet to be relevant on an international scale, no OG or WC medals, podiums in a major marathon.
0.3 / 10 is for you, you no poontang having, match.com abusing, letsrun trolling, good for nothing, self-righteous, holier than thou, backstabbing, two-faced blowhard.

Funny how after Mosop did the 30K WR and G Mutai ran 2:05:06 in NY, everyone now thinks Boston was legit for them, but not for Hall. Funny how the wind must have skipped the top 2 and only pushed Hall that day.

Actually, nobody with any sense thinks that the Boston times were legit for Mosop and Mutai.
Nice try with the attempt to sneak that one in there, though. Props!

I'm pretty sure Coach Canova thought they were pretty legit. I think he has some sense when it comes to the marathon.
I think Hersch is just trying to get his own name in the newspaper by becoming the story instead of reporting a story. Pretty sad people consider him a 'journalist'.
It's strange that Hersh has such a thin skin. Here's more on the picking on Ryan Hall thing:
http://www.sacramentorunning.com/2011/10/14/lets-all-pick-on-ryan/
This stuff is no different than what Lebron has been going through for years. Everybody blamed him for Miami losing even though the coach had him standing by the sidelines half the game as his teammates turned the ball over.
It is amazing how ignorant people are and just blindly listen to other dolts tell them how good such and such SHOULD be in their minds and are disappointed when they don't meet those ridiculous expectations.
On one hand I think Phil took things too far and is creating an unecessary controversy (very similar to what Letsrun did to Webb with the "tantrum" and the Rupp/Solinsky "feud").
On the other hand, there is WAY too much sensitivity when it comes to our top runners. They are treated like sacred cows and all hell breaks loose the minute someone criticizes them in any way shape or form. If this were basketball, football, baseball, etc. it would be a non-issue.
The only reason Phil Hersh is still talking about Hall is because it gets him noticed. Like all of the other Olympic writers in the U.S., he's obviously in fear of losing his job. Considering his age, it'll be tough for him to find another job. The Tribune and Times aren't doing so well and reporters are still being let go. 2012 might be Hersh's last go around as a well-paid journalist, so unless he can show his bosses that people actually read his work, he'll most likely be out of a job after London.
I ran into Hersh a couple years ago. The guy is a prick, he has a huge ego, and really for no good reason. His writing and journalism is average and it's funny how the top athletes in our sport barely know who he is (Schumacher's group walked right by him in the media tent and went and talked to RW, RT, RunnerSpace and FloTrack reporters they actually knew). I don't wish the guy to lose his job, because honestly our sport needs traditional newspaper coverage and he is one of the last of a dying breed, but he's a jerk and will find it hard pressed to get good interviews and stories at the Olympics now.
Why does the name Jim Gray keep popping into my head?
