Wisconsin will lose Krause and Collins, but the others are still there and the likes of Shields, Brice, Brill, and the new guys will be stepping up by then. Plus, if they win it this year, I would not be surprised if another runner in the situation Collins was in (and Ford back a half-dozen years before) look at Wisconsin and see about filling one of those top 5 places. If they do, Wisconsin will be tough to beat.
I am not sure why people do not give Byrne his due. He has consistently done well developing and polishing his runners. But for the unfortunate miscalculation by Krause (he was still pushing up the order at 8000 and 9000m, probably because he knew they needed every point to challenge OSU given how well OSU's #5 guy was doing, only to overdo it and explode some time during the last 800 meters) Wisconsin would have been second, much closer to a great race by OSU.
Remember, Wisconsin is competing with a track and field/XC team where the scholarships are split with top SP/Deca/Mid-distance guys, whereas OSU and some other schools (Portland) does not compete across the full range in track and puts almost all of their marbles into XC. The same compromise holds for Indiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and even Oregon.
And Wisconsin is there EVERY year (been in the top 5 all except for one 7th since 1995 and only lower than 15th once (19th) in 30 years).
