I, personally, would like to see Hall run a race like Fukuoka and have a legitimate shot at winning, as well as a real opportunity to compete. He'll still make bank, too, if that's a concern.
I think he is putting himself into these impossible scenarios, where his opportunities to win are nothing more than statistical flickers of hope. He needs to get in races that give him real chance to practice winning and racing.
Critics are going to come out and say he's ducking competition, or what's the point if you're not racing the best. But I believe at some point, you stop learning from getting your ass kicked. How do you ever learn to swim if your head is under water every time you step in the pool?
Hall needs to find races that shake out similar to the 2008 Olympic Trials did, where he can practice feeling in control, and own the distance. I think that will teach him some things that he isn't learning by constantly getting fourth place, racing nothing but his own emotions for the last 15K of his marathons.
