if you have a high GPA, you might be able to miss practice a lot even if you're a walk-on. the coaches like high GPA guys even if they're slow because they bring up the team GPA and make the team look good to the athletic dept

We talking about practice?
I wouldn't suggest missing practice. I played D1 soccer and if you missed without connecting with the coach first usually meant you were off the team...
1st miss: Warning plus 100 pushups, 6 100s
2nd miss: No meet plus extra work on race day
3rd miss: Haven't witnessed it, hope I never have to
My coach once said to me, "Looks like you've been missing a lot of practice lately"
My rseponse, "I wouldn't say I've been *missing* it, Coach"
back when i was at school, one day i just forgot about practice and didnt show up for the first hour.
Coach just said walk it off and i get a freeby a year.
i wasnt scared about getting kicked of the team for that.
but one time i missed the team bus and didnt travel to a meet.
i was more worried then, but all worked out well.
I didn't run for a D1 school, but I can't imagine anyone on our cross team missing practice for anything besides a class or being injured. I don't think the coach would have kicked someone off the team for it, but I'm sure the person would never have heard the end of it.
Depends on if you're a guy or girl. If coach noticed a guy missing a practice more than once he usually let the guy know he'd be off the team if he missed another practice. Girls could apparently just miss as many as they wanted, because kicking girls off the team would screw up our Title IX ratio, which would piss off the administration.
Oh man, speedstar, I love that video. I actually thought about it last night out of the blue."We talking about practice - not a game."

Back in my competitive days I had a fairly strict coach. He would take away our cell phone if we missed practice. It sucked the big one, my man, truly sucked the big one.
I'm sorry but this just made me laugh my ass off. "Back in my competitive day... he would take our cell phone". Damn, back in my day, there were no cell phones. In fact, I don't think we had any possessions worth taking. Maybe a Walkman.
you were kicked off the team
I ran at a school that was highly regarded academically, where the coach was basically prohibited from requiring that anybody come to practice. If you felt like you needed to study or complete a problem set rather than come to practice, that was your choice. Two factions developed on the team, one that came to practice every day and one that was content to have a locker. As a D1 athlete, at that time in my life (before cell phones), running fast was the most important thing, and I wanted to be fast more than the coach wanted it for me. I would have trained every day even if the coach hadn't come to practice.
