If you're trying to recruit a particular runner, or trying to evaluate runners' performances to decide whether they're worth the time to try to recruit, check how they placed in important meets relative to other athletes. Learning that your guy ran 15:30 for "5K" last fall doesn't tell you anything. It might, however, be useful to know that he was 6th at state XC last fall as a junior, finishing 20 seconds behind the 9:00 two-miler who won the meet.
Agreed. Why are you even looking at XC times? If you want to judge an athlete's XC performances, look finishing place at states and big invites.
I was more commenting on the absurdly fast xc times as compared to their track times than suggesting that's how I am recruiting. It seems like they just keep getting faster as compared to their track times over the last decade. I'm well aware how much things differ & that it's worth putting in the work to compare performances & understand the level of competition.
Thanks for the responses, I was curious & just making an amusing observation more than anything. I've had both Cali & Illinois kids from large classes on the team with blazing xc times & not much else to speak of & other small class kids with impressive track times from other parts of the country. Guess who got a lot more money to come?
