I got a haircut this week. I don't race well the week I get a haircut.
I just had open heart surgery last night so I might not go as fast.
My leg was amputated. This one's prosthetic.
I'm blind.
I'm morbidly obese so I'm probably gonna walk after a good 400. I may have a nice little 200 meter jog into the finish. The middle 13 miles? Nah. Not worried about that.
"I just decided to run this race at 11 o'clock last night."
Classic.
These are terrible. What if they ARE sick/injured? Or they ARE running tempo? These don't seem lame, you just seem insecure.
An example of lame would be something made-up or something that shouldn't effect performance:
I can't win because I'm in witness protection and I can't have my picture in the paper.
I sprained my wrist last week.

Settle down Mumbles. Here are a couple of Rules to Live By:
If you are sick or injured, don't race.
Don't pay an entry fee to run a "tempo" run or workout. Those bad boys come free. If you have a number on your chest, you should be racing.

I think it depends on the context of how the issue is brought up. If somebody asks what your goals for the race are, there's nothing wrong with bringing up whatever factors might impact today's performance. I think that it's more the unsolicited excuses that people are complaining about. The guy who insists on broadcasting whatever problem might hold him back despite the fact that nobody is the least bit interested.
I've said this a few times. It has never been an excuse - just a fact. Anyone ever 'race' during a spring break trip in college? I did.
The better question is who talks on the starting line of a race. What is wrong with you people?
I guess this is what goes on in the back corrals.
Hint: No one cares about you.
It's too hot/cold/windy/rainy/sunny to run today.
You've never chatted before a road race? Too busy taking gel inserts and filling your hydration pack? Most road races I've done are pretty laid back. Now go take that stick out you super elite pro runner you.

Turkey Trot, please, Ohio high school CC hears that all the time.
I am going to run slow so I can check out the hot butts

Personally, I view local road races as fun events, not super serious competitions. I get enough serious competition on the track. When I show up at some summer 5K, I'm just there to have fun. So yes, I'll converse and even laugh and have a good time at the start line. Then I'll kick your uptight ass in the race, all the while enjoying myself and not taking myself overly seriously.

I don't know what you are talking about.
What I do know is that you are one of those annoying chatty guys at the start of a race to whom I politely smile before walking to another spot on the line.
my friends are always like this. man, i dont know... i'm not in very good shape, i'm just not expecting much.
me, well, i'm not afraid to say, i'm going out hard and hopefully i can run a pr.
I only had 2 BMs this morning. I wish could have had a 3rd one.
I once read the comment that if you stood at the start line of a race and closed your eyes and just listened, you'd think you were in the Emergency Room of a hospital.
this cycle of winstrol hasn't kicked in yet...not sure how i'll do.

Is there something that I don't know about menstruation? How does being on your period lead to diarrhea?
