I talked to Rojo today who was in Kenya for USAs and he said something along the lines of "Rupp's going to medal" or "Rupp's got a good shot at medalling."
I told him about this thread and his first response was, "what about the 10k?"
The 10k is his best chance. Lagat is in the 5000. Makes it harder right off the bat. Solinsky beat Rupp as well. Makes it harder. The great thing about Worlds is there are only 3 Kenyans and 3 Ethiopians in the race. Not all of them are going to have a good day. Birmingham was similar in some ways in that the field was limited with no Kenyan runners. Thus it's a bit easier to finish 2nd or 3rd but Rupp and Farah crushed Merga.
As for being a medal favorite at 10,000m, I guess it's how you define "favorites". Will he be a top 3 betting favorite for a medal? No. Farah has to be put ahead of him. I'm going to put one guy from Kenya and at one from Ethiopia as well ahead without knowing the team. But he is very, very close.
Worldwide the track does not seem as strong this year. I wonder if a guy like Geoffrey Mutai is running the 10,000m Trials. In the old days he'd be looking for gold in Daegu, now he's probably training for a fall marathon but I don't know anything one way or the other.
And in this other thread on Rupp

someone said Lagat closed in 51.7 in a 12:59 race. I called bs on it but the guy was right. Here is what I wrote:
I went and tried to verify this as I thought it was bs.
I found Lagat running 12:59 in 2005 when he beat the World Champ Limo. His last lap was 53.41

But then I saw Lagat ran 12:59 in 2006 as well.
His last lap was "sub 52" so you are right:
