That field was too big, but Centro probably learned he needs to get out super fast. He's definitely worth more than this time, judging by how much extra distance he ran.

Yeah, Wheating got him by a whole 0.4 seconds in the middle of the pack. Clearly superior.
I agree that Centro (and Wheating) have to learn how to run in that kind of 1500. Centro probably ran 600m in lane 2 because he got out at the back of a big field. I don't have a problem with starting controlled, but not with 18 other guys ahead of you. Too many passes to get into good position.
I trolled all of you fools so hard! :)

Dammit, I can't take this madness anymore.
Good position for what? To win? Are you kidding? He had one goal and one goal only: hit the A standard. Why would he go out more aggressively and risk blowing up? He ran a very contained, composed, and intelligent race and did exactly what he needed to do. Sure, now that he has the mark he can cut loose and try some different tactics.
To reiterate to all of you clueless yaps: Centro had one goal here- to hit the A. He did it. Any and all critical comments about his performance need to stop immediately.

Well, Manzano probably had the same goal but he didn't cut it quite so close. If Centro really wanted to ensure he hit the A Standard he should have been a little closer to the front.
Why let it come down to a few hundreds of a second?
Who cares? He got the standard. That is awesome. Why so much hate for a young man who appears to have a tremendous career in front of him. I don't understand the negative posts. Please explain why you negative posters are so jealous of a young man who seems to be accomplishing so much.
Pretty ridiculous to think that Centrowitz went into a race knowing exactly what it would feel like to run the standard and no better. The truth is, he and Wheating went into that race and ran their asses off, leaving absolutely nothing in the tank, to make sure they made the standard. They ran as hard as they could, and they finished--what was it?--seventh and eleventh? or something like that. And just barely under the minimum qualifying standard. Centrowitz is badly outclassed.
Actually, Centrowitz went into the race needing to run 3:38.00 to make it the World Championships.
He surpassed that by a lot and got an invaluable experience.
Some people would only be happy if all 4 Americans placed in the top three.
Actually Manzano didn't have the same goal. Follow along with me: Leo ran 3:32 last year. Centro's life time PB coming into the race was 3:36. Do you see the difference? Centro was necessarily walking more of a razor's edge to hit the A standard. Going out 2 seconds faster (or whatever it would take to stay near the front) could very well have cost him during the final 400m.
Comparing him to Leo is not really the best idea: call me crazy (again, why let facts and logic stop me) I would say that at this point, Leo is a faster 1500m runner. As is Lagat. As is Wheating. Faster PRs, and they just beat him in a fast race. Again, it simply makes Matt's usatf win all the more impressive.
Doesn't the guy who made this thread feel like a dumb ass now...
All part of an evil Nike plan to give Centro the experience he would need to do well at the WC. Those basstards!
I haven't figured out how this young man has such a talent for achievement beyond expectation. Congrats MC. May you teach that skill in the future.

The guy is at LEAST one tier below everyone else in the field, and also below probably dozens of runners who would never be allowed to the starting line?
My question: which element of the USATF-Nike-IAAF you-pat-my-back-I-pat-yours club is it that gets runners who simply AREN'T world-class into world-class races?
This thread is now an example of "honestly!!" being unable to recognize talent.
To be fair recognizing talent can be difficult, and many people do not have the ability. The thread creator clearly being one of the people who does not have the ability.
