Sound the alarms, we have a stage three crossfitter.
You know how people say "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"? Metabolic conditioning (MetCon, to crossfitters) is a prime example of that. Running is a prime example of metabolic conditioning, its just not the kind you've been taught to strive for.
Taken from the crossfit forums, a MetCon workout is:
1. High Heart Rate
2. Simultaneous Use of Many Muscles
3. Continuous Movement
4. Short to Medium Time (5-30 min)
Sounds like a tempo run, if you ask me.
Try doing a MetCon workout I guarantee that it's 10x easier than a tempo run. After being injured and attempting cross training to stay fit, I realized all other workouts are rubbish compared to running. If you think other forms of exercise are as good as running you haven't done much running.
I played Lacrosse practicing at least 4 days a week, in practice we would do wind sprints, push ups, sit ups, strength training, stairs etc. I quit for 1 year and ran middle distance and when I went back to Lacrosse I was 10x faster and in 40X better shape than everyone. I didn't notice a difference in strength, but I'm blessed with natural strength. Before ever lifting weights at age 16 I could bench press 100lbs multiple times without significant effort. So maybe running would have some effect on most peoples strength but I didn't notice.
Long Story Short: Running gets you in better shape than any other sport/training hands down. If you don't agree that you have obviously never tried running.
