Thankfully we have pillars of society that call out narcissistic posters like GOI. Facebook and Instagram have been very successful in dealing with this narcissistic scourge on society. It is about time that the Brojos clamped down on such disgusting behavior. We are better than that. The discriminating eye of old guy and Bertrand can rescue us from such violations of societal norms.

Can you hang from a chin up bar for 100 seconds?
The heat and humidity did me in last week. I felt terrible on every run. I bailed on my LR on Sunday and cried out to my coaches for mercy. Thankfully, they took pity on me and gave me a recovery week that has made all the difference mentally and physically.

I've got an actual in-person sprint tri next Sunday (with Covid restrictions) so this will be another easy week of training. I need to get in two USA Triathlon sanctioned races in 2020 to get my national ranking so I'm hoping a September race near me will actually happen.
As crazy as it may seem, my college is still planning on going with in-person classes. Most professors have elected to do hybrid with live streaming. Even though I'm on sabbatical, my summer has been filled with arranging classrooms, buying technology for my department's faculty, and installing signage. I'm doubtful that we'll be in-person when I return in the spring so I'm using my fall to get all my classes ready to go online. If online ends up being a long term plan, I'm going to hang up my slide rule and head for the hills.
Long May You Run!
July was hot but was my highest miles per month in 12 months. Manage 200 miles for the month despite the increase in temp & humidity. Seem to finally get rid of the shin splints. I believe cause by a lot of down hill running. 61.5 y/o male .
New World Record 4 x 1500m Relay. 16:27.04. And I adore the Bowerman Babes. But is this a good time to brag (when you're injured with a right ankle/foot double stress reaction)? Of course it is. I am Still a proud owner of a leg of the Masters 4x1500 world record with these fine folks....

Y'all have a great week! KP
KP,
Really fast times and something to be proud of. I would have been hard pressed to run that fast at half that age.

My whitewater is limited to occassionally skipping through some piddly little rapids on the nearby Campaspe. A mans gotta know his limitations lol
I mucked around on hired kayaks when working at Fairfield Infectious Disease Hospital in my 20s. It was situated near 2 boathouses on Melbourne's Yarra River. Just very tame paddling with friends.
For my 50th my wifwe bought me the kayak I am still using 11 years later. I am self taught and am happy to restrict myself to pretty tame conditions.
I find it an excellent fitness activity for both body and mnd.
I didn't post last week.
It was a pretty typical week until sunday morning when I woke in a good degree of back pain and with Meralgia Parenthesis of my left thigh. MP is an issue with the subcutaneous nerves causing a burning or numb sensation of the skin of the thigh.
Not sure what had happened, I was fine when I finished my shift at 10.30 saturday night.
Anyway a hot shower, a 4 km walk and a bunch of stretching had me feeling good enough to run.
The back pain and the MP returned in the evening.
I took the week off work and skipped my activities until friday by which time it had improved significantly.
So the previous week.
Mon. 1 hour kayak, Tue. 1 hr 38 min hard mtn bike,. Wed. 15 km easy run 1hr 29 m. Thu. 1 hr 8 min kayak. Fri. 1 hr 40 m mtn bike. Sat. 6 km steep, rough trail run 40 mins. Sun. 11 km steep rough trail run in 1 hr 14 m.
The week just gone. I chose to focus on stretching and trying to free up the left hip and lower back. A few sleepless nights as sitting and lying down was uncomfortable.
I walked 4 to 5 kms twice a day as this relieved the discomfort.
Friday I was feeling much improved so took the kayak out for 45 mins on the lake. I felt much freer through the hips after this.
Saturday I took the mountain bike out for a solid 76 mins in the dark along the railtrail.
Sunday I joined some friends for an 8 km social run in 44 mins.
In the evening I jogged another 9.4 kms in 53 mins.
I finally got out for my multiply-weather-delayed backpacking trip Friday through Sunday. Not a cloud in the sky, upper 40s at night and upper 70s during the afternoon near 8200 feet. The sun was brutal but it felt really nice in the shade. We got an early start and packed 10 miles in on Friday, 1100 ft net uphill with about 1600 ft of total climbing. A short 6-mile day hike followed by hanging out at a lake on Saturday. 8 miles out, net downhill with less pack weight (my gosh, my dogs eat a lot!) on Sunday. Gorgeous scenery, mild to nonexistent mosquito activity, and my two young big dogs had a blast. A great trip altogether. I ran only the first four days of the week for 42 miles total, but got plenty of leg-strengthening cross-training.
Mike Lundgren, I’ve pulled muscles in my rib cage just by reaching a bit too far for something. I’m kind of amazed that I managed to sleep for two nights in a sleeping bag in a lightweight backpacking tent with tiny zippered escape hatches and not hurt anything.
My husband and I were musing on which of the four of us will be the first who can’t do it anymore. He is 66 and in fantastic shape. I’m 62 and losing athletic ability quickly, but it doesn't show up much when hiking. My two dogs are 17 months and 22 months. In 8 years the humans will be 74 and 70 and both dogs will be approaching 10 years. Who will have to stay home first?
dhaaga, my university has also switched to remote-only for fall. At least we now know what we’re doing and it will be a lot simpler than the various hybrid options that were being tossed around. I just hope they don’t shut down the research labs again. We really need to be able to do our scholarship, particularly my young colleagues who are just establishing their research programs.
SCgal, good for you for getting an in-person race! I am stuck here in a big COVID-19 hotspot in a very, very careful state, and there seems to be little hope of any races until 2021. And good luck to your college with the in-person classes…
amkelley,
You are doing better than I am. Our backpacking trip was a total of 8 miles, about the same climbing elevation and altitude. I seemed more tired than the 30+ mike trip we took last year. I did feel a little run down before we started. I also popped my backpack air mattress. I had a patch kit, but it did not stop the leak. So two nights of sleeping on hard ground. Perhaps another reason I was more beat up this year. Then again maybe age is catching up.

i'm not sure i've seen any evidence of "pillars of society" on letsrun, but maybe i'm not looking hard enough. personal experience has shown me, though, that more often what come from high on the horse is suspiciously similar to what falls directly beneath the horse...
but i think you've got facebook and instagram completely wrong: they have been very successful in promoting narcissism; in fact, i think it's part of their business model and mission statement.
but back to our regularly scheduled programming: if i may indulge my own narcissism, solid week of training for me-- on friday did 8x300 with 2 minutes rest, running 51 down to 49s for the last 3 with a female teammate who's hoping to have a couple of track races. figured she needed the help, and i have no idea what i'm training for right now. came back on saturday and ran 5 mile progression with concordia university (irvine) kids, with first 2 miles at 6 minute pace, next three at 5:30 and felt surprisingly spry, finishing the week with 68 miles...
after 12 consecutive years of carlsbad, not sure i can summon the mental fortitude for a virtual run, but, like all of us to a degree, i'm compulsive about some streaks, so i guess i'll have to manage something...
KP, i've heard some stories surrounding those relays; in my opinion, the 4x15 is still a little soft, but the 4x8 should stand for a while. that's not meant to be a criticism, mind you--many "teams" have learned how hard it is to get 4 old dudes running well on the same day, not to mention finding a meet that'll schedule a race like 4x15, but i'll bet the same 4 dudes on a different day could have run sub-16:20 easy, if not sub-16:10. that said, there's a reason why it's a record and has been for well over 10 years....
in a couple of weeks, i'll also be starting the year teaching remotely, and yes, i feel it's only remotely teaching, but i'll make do. i still have no idea how i'll manage coaching remotely with such a new, undisciplined program--i'm open to suggestions...

Mopac, my wife and I treated ourselves to a pair of "sea kayaks" before we were married, and kayaked the Connecticut River on our honeymoon. During the 18 years since, we've explored dozens of lakes, rivers and streams. Even competed in kayak-bike-run triathlons.
To further emulate you, I should get my late brother's mountain bike out of the barn and onto the trails. It's one of the earliest production models -- a Fuji Mount Fuji from maybe 1984? Needs some work, though.

I think I've said this before, but my opinion, based only on my own experience, is Ego is the root of almost all of my running injuries.

Almost all of my running injuries were rooted in delusional thinking :>)

assuming the initial question is not rhetorical: i've been running on narcissism for nearly 40 years with no end in sight...
though in all seriousness, i'm not sure we'd spend so much time literally and figuratively running around in circles (and then posting on this board about it) without a fair amount of ego involved.
in the end, you hope it's not all that drives you, but without it i guess i'd be just as happy playing bingo, and posting on letsbingo.com...
as for delusional thinking, i think it's a privilege of our age...
that's my story and i'm sticking to it,

KP - Great memories of that relay ... BUT one addition to the walk down memory lane. Angel Roman hobble-hopped the final 100 meters of his leg on that 16:24 with a pulled hammy! I still remember screaming, "Run, run, run!" after he first popped into the air at about 1300-1400 meters ... afterward, I was horrified that I'd done that. But even more horrified that you, me, and Tony were celebrating that record at the finish line, when suddenly someone asked, "Where's Angel?" And, of course, he was sprawled out on the ground at the 200 meter mark on the backstretch, where he'd gone down right after the handoff. OMG, I can laugh about it, because Angel laughed about it at the time--and said he never had any regrets afterward.
FYI, a group of us came back a year later, no one pulled a hammy, and we ran 17:14 for the 4 x Mile, also still the masters record.
