Actually, yet again Hall under achieves. He was almost 2 minutes down from the winner. This is a race, not a time trial. The fast times are nice, but everyone ran fast. I am much more impressed with Davila. She was not talked about much, but was in the mix and raced this to the very end,
Yogi B wrote:This is to all the bone heads who kept saying Hall was done, he'll never run faster (just like they do daily about German F)....clearly Hall is not "done" and neither is German. When someone has the talent and is focused and works hard, this is the result! Congrats Ryan, fantastic run!
What do you mean, he underachieved? Do you think if he had just gutted it out that he could have been with the leaders? You don't know how tired he was. I guess if you think he underachieved in that sense, then you should be able to go out and be a world-beater right now by just being tough enough. Please explain your position.
Congrats to Hall, he really went out there and mixed it up. Call it a time trial or a race for him, but NONE OF YOU actually know because you weren't the ones out there mixing it up with the leaders. I would definitely not call that a time trial just because he missed an opportunity to go 4:23 for one of his miles and then caught back up. Big whoop, who cares.

OMG World Record!
I wonder what Geb is going to do now. People are faster than him, I bet a million dollars that he retires, especially after his poor showing in the half that he just ran.
Also, USA! Ryan Hall AR! America REPRESENT!
Awesome.
Awesome.
It's amazing how slow Boston normally is when there is no tailwind. I ran it last year and found the wind condition "neutral"- it was mostly a cross wind from the NW until the Newton Hills after the fire station where it was a legitimate tailwind. The times were reflected as such last year- a CR but still way off the world's best times from Berlin, Chicago, et al. This year, with wind blasts from the much more effective direction of W/SW, Boston finally got some parity (and then some) with those other courses and literally blew them away.
And to 26mi285- yes the ground wind speed is typically less then the weather station measurements, but in specific locations such as Beacon Street- the effects of the surrounding buildings will be to funnel the wind down the street with a concentrated force often higher than the reported speed. Without yet looking at the splits I can almost guarantee that miles 22-25 were the fastest splits today.
Yuppers. I've run Boston and I laugh at people who talk about it being a point to point downhill course. These are always people who haven't run it. Despite being a net downhill course, it is normally a fairly slow course the way it's laid out...except...on the odd year when you have the strong winds blowing from the west. Then, like today, LOOK OUT! Huggs Becky

Bumping my favorite race thread of all-time in honor of Monday's race. And sifting through the old posts, I can't believe nobody took credit for this uncanny prediction on page 17. What a day of running that was.
