WALNUT, Calif. --- UC Irvine junior Charles Jock won the Invitational Elite 800-meter race in the 53rd annual Mt. SAC Relays Saturday afternoon at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut.
Jock broke his school record from last season with a time of 1:45.19, which is the top mark in the United States this year. Fred Samoei of Alabama was second in 1:45.52 and Tetlo Emmen, running unattached, finished third in 1:46.63.
Jock broke Steve Scott's 32-year-old school record in the 800 in March 2010 and posted a top time last year of 1:45.65.
Jock earned All-America honors last year and was a gold-medalist in the 800 meters for the U.S. at last July's North American, Central American and Caribbean U-23 Championships. He was named the 2010 Big West Conference Athlete of the Year in men's track.
The pressure of being the GWH of the year got to him.
The heat index of 100 got to him?
Not in an 800

It sure would affect him. It's been a cold Spring on the East Coast this year. State College is even colder. Stepping out of the airport would be like going from a cooler to a hot kitchen. He'll be fine once the weather finally turns on the East coast.
No chance Malmo. Heat (unless extreme i.e above 110) will not affect an 800m. Your a Penn State homer.
Idiots have opinions too.
heat like that can definitely affect an 800. i have been there. congrats to Jock....that is a big race!

Of course heat can affect an 800. You're (that's you're, not your) an idiot.
When it's hot, the capillaries in your skin dilate and blood flows to the skin to carry heat to the surface. Blood being diverted to the skin means blood is diverted away from the muscles. If you're not acclimated, this can certainly hurt your performance. I'm not sure why this would only impact people in longer events.

Dilweed....the change in conditions could affect a person simply existing in that kind of atmosphere. It doesn't have to be a heat stroke situation to affect a person. I recall struggling in a 400m race in HS because my body was completely depleted by a sudden heatwave in which I had to hang around for my event. By the time the race came I had nothing.
Where does Emmen train? No sponsor?
These are the womens 800 results. Keep in mind that Oshier ran 4:04 in virtually the same conditions (90F). Maybe Cas was sick or maybe the weather affected his speed work (perhaps a bigger effect than the heat)?
