I may be thinking of someone else, but isn't this the last year he is eligible to run in HS competition? I thought I read somewhere that he is going to age out after this year. Is that right, or am I thinking of someone else?
Well, he just turned 17, so next year will be his last year in the USATF Young Mens division. Beyond that, it depends on the state rules for eligibility... he would be eligible for a second year in some states, but I'm not sure if it would be the same in all states.
As for what's a "good" time... sub-9 is good in most cases, but for a guy that runs 8:43y, a 9:00 isn't too surprising... he really should be sub-8:50 even if he hasn't been training for the steeple (yes, I'm saying he should have no problem breaking the record, he is already faster than Hess/Shields/Gregorek were). And this was not his first meet of the year, he's had a whole season already (indoors).
