A decent rule of thumb is your 3k steeple time is equal to your open 2 mile time. This is pretty weak actually.

This, this does not indicate he will go anywhere NEAR sub 8:30 in HS. That would be ridiculous.

Considering it is low 30s, windy, and drizzling in New Jersey, it is probably not a bad time.

That reminds me of an all comers spring track meet when I was at the University of Chicago. It was low 30s with a very strong wind. I was jogging to the track with a friend and he saw our teammate lined up alone for the steeplechase. Friend can't let this guy win anything, so he speeds up and enters the race. Another guy comments, "You know it's bad out when the steeplechase pit has white caps on it." So bad day. Friend beats teammate, and the front of his singlet has a layer of ice on it when he finished the race. Nasty day for running.

He's certainly going to run under 8:50 this year (btw, h.s. record is 8:50).

THis is true more or less. Steeple times are a bit faster than what most could run for an open 2-mile, for example, shaheen was not capable of a 7:53 deuce. Probably more like 8:00 or a tad under. But since this kid is not an experienced steepler, yes, his time would equate to approximately a 2-mile time.

In short....

a) he is not likely good at jumping the hurdles

b) his indoor 2 mile was a much better quality performance

c) there was bad weather yesterday, so not bad at all...

More East Africans are figuring out that the highschool to NCAA path is much more of a sure thing than trying to attract an agent for a pro running career in Africa.

On one hand that gives the talented East Africans a degree as a backup.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if 3-4 East Africans pop up out of seemingly no where in the highschool distance running scene next year.

Having Africans "imported" to the HS scene is nothing new. Keino's kid, Meb, what's his name that ran for Oregon, that Georgia-based Kenyan (Erassa?). Sooner or later we're going start landing kids from Africa that can threaten our records. We'll be getting more than just a few kids as well.

It's not their fault they want a better life for themselves. I say raise the ante in your training, in your approach to racing. If you can't be an imported Kenyan - you sure as hell won't be beating the best in the world.

This really a weak performance. Anyone that a sophomore in high school that running above 8:30 for the two mile is slow. What a slow piece of E. African s**t. He's slow. I can't believe how slow his is. Geez, he's slow.

One time, back in 1987, when I just graduated high school, my father said to me "holy f**ckin' s**t, that Kenyan kid in New Jersey is slow."

That kid really slow. This must be an April Fool's joke, because anything slower that 8:30 for the two mile is slow.

My wife just ran 8:31 for two miles, so she's slow. I told her that.

Only if you have shitty barrier skills. Something tells me this kid probably has shitty technique and a huge engine.

I may be thinking of someone else, but isn't this the last year he is eligible to run in HS competition? I thought I read somewhere that he is going to age out after this year. Is that right, or am I thinking of someone else?

Will this kid finally take down Guerrini's 5:43 2000?
