When did a 3-hour marathon become something to brag about?
Let me answer your qusetion with another: In any marathon, what percentile of all finishers would you be in with a 3-hour time? Back when Boston qualifier was 2:50, a 3-hour time would likely have you in 95th percentile of any other race.
Lance Armstrong's first marathon effort, paced every step of the way by Hiccam El Guerrouj, Joan Samuelson, or Alberto Salazar, was just under three hours, and he described the experience as the most physically painful of his life. Think about that. Not elite, but respectable. Not achieved by the casual runner.
