Brief summary: Looking for recommendations for a good trail shoe. My requirements are some sort of forefoot protection (rock plate), and a fairly aggressive outsole (forefoot AND heel). I'd prefer something that is not super heavy.
I am currently running in the Cascadia 4, and overall I like the shoe. The sole is pretty aggressive, and the forefoot offers protection from the typical Pennsylvania pointy rocks that my road shoes don't. However, they are pretty heavy ("clunky"), and the new version (6?) has a revised sole that seems less aggressive, so I am ready to consider alternatives.
I'll be using the shoe primarily for training, although there may be some racing in it as well. Primary use is rocky/rooty/hilly singletrack. For what it's worth, I generally wear a mid-weight neutral or light support road shoe (Launch, Ravenna, Glide) and do some stuff in lightweight/flats (Kinvara, etc).
Some options:
Cascadia 6 - Known decent shoe, less aggressive sole, heavy.
Saucony Peregrine - Lighter weight, good looking sole, no rock plate. The lack of rock plate blows what may otherwise be a perfect shoe.
NB 101 - Lighter weight (maybe too light), has rock plate, sole not super aggressive
Any other suggestions??
THANKS!
