The Greeks held the Olympic games for 1500 years. If you have no respect for the Olympics nor the University of Oregon tradition of dominance in track and field then what are you doing here on letsrun.com ?

Exactly in which Summer Olympics did Pre win this gold??? The only Olympics he ever competed in was in '72 in Munich, and he placed 4th in the 5K. Learn facts straight before you start calling others out for not appreciating the sport, moron.
You anti Nike, anti UO people suck. Track Town USA is only in Eugene. Pre is the greatest runner in the history of the US because of his Olympic Gold Medal.
Yes Pre may have finished 4th, but he showed more guts as a 24 year old than any American distance runner has, before or after Pre. He is a hero to American distance runners because he was about fire, determination and spit in your face. Go Pre, you will live forever in our memory.
Coulda Shoulda Woulda
Hey, I love Pre don't get me wrong. He is a HUGE inspiration to many, many runners (myself included), and his surge with 2 laps left in the 5K finals in '72 took a lot of guts. One helluva racer in my (on obviously many others) opinion.
I was merely pointing out that he never medaled (which is a shame) because someone has there facts waayyy off.

WikiMedals says Pre got an Olympic Gold and Phil Knight has been seen at Pre's grave with a straw sucking the last bits of DNA from Pre's rotting corpse.
Well said, thank you.
There are so many losers on this board who hate on everything/everyone that's good in this sport.
I 2nd that. Pre's Gold Medal inspired me to become a runner in high school too.
Pre was a gutsy runner who inspired a lot of people.
However he also drove while drunk and behaved irresponsibly.
Also what annoys people is Oregon has cahsed in on Pre for almost 40 years. And by cashed in I mean cashed in. Full Phil Knight support, unfair advantages in scholarship allocations, a win-at-all-costs and any criticcism directed toward them is evil approach. Marketing 101 I guess but would Pre really go for all of this artificial NIKE-fed glitz and glamor? Probably not. Point is Pre does not stand for what Oregon stands for today, and yet Oregon continues to prop themselves up on Pre's legacy. I'm just not sure Pre would even be down with it.
Did the team get crazy drunk together?
I wonder how many more Golds he could have won - like Frank Shorter did in '72 and '76!
Well cry babies R us ;-( Pre's Oly silver medal and Oly bronze medal were no easy feat either. Show me your medals ?
Pre's 4 Olympic medals won over the course of two Olympic games is one of the most monumental feats in Distance running history, and it was one of the greatest sources of inspiration for the rebirth of running in the 90s, when all the kids who watched him on the TV as little children grew up.
I met Pre when I was only 12. He had just won the gold in the Olympic 5k and was signing copies of his New York Times best-selling book A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.
He was so nice. I remember him telling me that I could be as good as him one day if I just kept training hard.
I remembered those words when he died for our country defending Pearl Harbor. What a sad day, but if he had not been there, who would have lassoed down the planes?
this is a funny thread. Do you all think Pre won medals or are you all just giving that guy shit?
