Joe Mac - I thought about your challenge as I finished my own 75 minute run last night..I usually try to throw strides in (5-6 x 45secs), it's mentally tough..I don't think that I have the balls to run a hard mile after each run.
I would give a damn if it were sub 4 miles. But since you have a 4.17PR it isn't that difficult at all. I bet there are many runners like you you that can do it regularly on a progression run.
Anyway, good luck with that.
Right, but remember that he said he's nowhere near PR shape.
I second a comment on like the second page -- what would an equivalent time be for a girl to run every day? Sub 545? Sub 6? (I say this as someone not paricularly fast.)
Serious question: If you fail to run a sub-5 on any particular day, will you give it another try that day in an attempt to keep the streak going? Or will you limit it to one attempt per day?
this question has been answered, open your f***ing eyes
Yes, I will give it another attempt if I fail the first time. I am running between 14 and 20 miles per day so if one is 5.05 and one is 4.57 I will take it.
Also, to reply to one of the posts above on this page:
Yes, I have run 4.17 for one mile, but I am not in anywhere close to that shape and try running 110 to 130 miles weeks while doing this and tell me that at least one day wouldn't be that hard. I am purposely not changing my schedule for this and with a very high volume I am finding this to be quite challenging.

Are you training for an upcoming Marathon, or why all the miles? Is the point of your training just to do the mile a day challenge... or is there a bigger race picture in mind?
Joe Mac,
Please answer this question.
Why not warm up, do the mile, then get your mileage?
It would be much easier and you still win.
Maybe not do this everyday. I understand you don't want to sacrifice mileage or you want to be tough. You could do the mile in the am and then get your long run in the afternoon. There are so many better ways than the way you are doing it. Why wait? I just do not get it.

I second this request. Though I think I understand your current reasoning, I suspect a day will come when you will do the hard mile first because you will feel like there is no way your body can run 12 miles and THEN run a sub-5...which is kosher.
I like the way you're doing it now as it adds that mental anguish to the task. As per an above poster, I too must admit I was thinking of your as I finished my easy 10 tonight. Something along the lines of "I'd have to go 2 more easy and then try to run under 5 minutes. Gross." This thing is getting epic...

Yes, I'd be curious about that too. Haha I doubt I could even do sub 6 every day for a month the way he's doing it. If I just went to a track, warmed up, and ran the mile each day, then that would be another story. But yeah I'd guess sub 5:45 might be closest. I don't know though, would like to hear some other opinions.
Dont know who posted 4.39...but that is untrue.
Just got back and ran 4.58.00.
I am doing it the hard way one, not to sacrifice my real base training phase here and two, because, is there really any other way worthwhile.
I will post about it later, but tonight was a close call and it really came down to I am not trying this again tonight so I better get a move on it. Perfect conditions tonight, cool, clear, and no wind. Needless to say I would not have been able to do it tonight if there was wind, rain, or any deterrent other than me running myself into the ground this week.
Sub 5:45 sounds like a fair challenge
Guys its simple, we've done this more than anybody. Just get out in 75 seconds for the first quarter and then settle into 5 minute pace, and finish the last quarter all out in 75.
5:40-45 for a 5:00 mile PR is about right

Yea, I am currently training for a Spring Marathon and this was going to originally just be my base phase of 4 months of 6 week cycles of 5 high mileage weeks at 100-140 followed by 1 low mileage week at like 80. In this time I will typically do hilly runs, and no real workouts, just run on feel. That is not to say I wont throw in a 39 minute 7 miler or a 2 hour 20 miler, just nothing planned. Now I will be doing the mile everyday and do not want to compromise my base period.
Joe Mac,
Keep it going. I'm surprised how this is motivating me to get my strides in after every easy run.
