I seem to get dehydrated faster than most, and that has usually led to problems the last half of the race. I still plan on doing them once in a while, but more as a tourist and for training, not racing.
I know the dehydration thing all too well.
Ran my first in 3:11, the following year was more fit but suffered a knee injury (non running-related) about three weeks out. Only went to the starting line because friends had planned a post-race party. Didn't think I could finish, so went into the race without pressure. PR'd for the half marathon in part one, then proceeded to blow up completely and finished 2:57.
The following year I had workouts projecting mid 2:40 range. Nike/OTC went to a lottery. I didn't get in. Pretty much gave up on the distance after that.
My at-50 return to running got me to Boston, but, as noted, haven't figured out the hydration thing. With the ongoing injury thing, if I marathon again, it will be as a tourist.
