Let me rephrase. THAT we have a thread like this is indicative of a mindset that holds us back collectively.
Generally speaking, we as runners in the west are all about paces and heart rates and gels and compression socks and... you get the point. We have lost touch with our running spirits, so to speak. I am guilty of this as well.
So, we need to let go and not worry about how fast we do our recovery runs and our tempo runs and what our heart rates are. These things are limiters more than enablers I am afraid. Strangely, here I am, engaged in the conversation. Do as I say ? not as I do maybe? Anyway, I think we might all be better off if the only time we worried about time was after toeing it up and then looking at the clock.
What are you, 17?
Recovery runs are as slow as I can without feeling unnatural, which is usually means running 8:00 pace or so briefly at the beginning of the run and closer to 7:00 for the vast majority of the run.
Easy runs are the same only starting at 7:00 or so and then doing the bulk of the run at 6:40 pace or so, but sometimes as fast as 6:00 if I'm feeling good. I don't try to run any certain pace; I just go by feel, and it usually works out to between 6:30 and 6:50.
Haven't run any competitive track races in a while. Hopefully this indoors. 4:13 mile PR from several years back.
