The temp was 97 degrees at the Coliseum when Ryun set his record. Downtown LA was 92, you can look this up. I was actually there. It was terribly hot in the stands. I was 10 years old. The on track temp was over 100 just like someone wrote earlier. The air quality in L.A. in those days was terrible. Just ask other folks from back in the day. The smog was so bad on many days, especially in summer, you couldn't see Griffith Park some days from where I lived, and it was only a few miles away. I lived near Vermont and Santa Monica. That area is third world now. Once I started running, I began to marvel at what a performance Ryun's feat was. To see him in person you could see how physically powerful he was in comparison to other middle distance runners. He was a freak. Someone said he was poorly trained. That's how I would put it. I agree with people who think most runners never hit what they're fully capable of.
