Keino beat Ryun once. ONCE.
Is there any possible level of accomplishment a runner can achieve that will make him or her immune to second guessing and criticism at Letsrun? "Only" ran 3:51 at a time when the previous WR was 3:53. Lost one race to Keino who grew up at Mexico City's altitude after having mono earlier in the year with Keino having the benefit of a pacemaker who set the race up for him.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Just like every runner in the entire history of the sport.
Ryun was a great runner because he trained so hard, and his body responded without breaking down.
is it true hes done workouts like 40x400?
Yes... it was a Saturday workout they did in high school. They were three minute quarters... so if you ran a 65 you can 2:05 to rest. Coach would pull kids out of the workout as they started to bonk. Most would make it to 20 before starting to fall apart.
Jim Ryun's 3:37.8 in Mexico City in 1968 was a great run considering that he was not a "child of altitude".
Who knows which of Ryun's great races was not on a dirt or cinder track?
i was a whiner in high school and drove bob timmons crazy
that's why he's crazy now see - because i drove him totally nuts
and i'm still whining
in fact now i've got a whole family of whiners
look at any of my videos and you can see how i keep whining about everything
YO I AM NOT CRITIZING HIM. i look up to mr ryun hes my hero. am just saying that he ran too much that he didn't need 80 miles at a fast pace would have been great and 110 was awesome its just that.. i think that he was overtrained
He ran 3;51.1 WR on a cinder track that was beat up from a night of racing, ...

I think this was a pretty awesome response.
Yes, Ryun was frequently overtrained.
If we accept the argument that Ryun was as talented as Keino, then yes, Keino got much more from much less; his was more specific and smarter training.
Aside from the fact Ryun spent a good deal of time at altitude before the Olympics, some also forget Keino had some fairly serious ailments of his own in 1968. He had also competed in additional events prior to his specialty. Hard to say Ryun was at some spectacular disadvantage.

And it was the only time it mattered.
Yes he overtrained. A lot actually. I don't care if people say, I wish I could burn out like him and break the WR. In my mind, he would have gone 3:46 if he didn't run himself to the ground.
Eh, for him it seemed to work pretty well. Some people are just freaks and can run hard every day or almost every day, most run best on the hard-easy-hard-easy approach, and some need more rest than that even. Considering he ran 3:55 in high school and had multiple WRs to his name, I would say what he was doing worked well FOR HIM. Doesn't mean it would work well for others.

idiot
do some research
he ran 3'33 off an amble for 1st 330 in 95F on a dishevelled dirt track
gun-to-taper on '70s synthetic with wabbits to 1100m on a 65 - 70F day, it wouda been
3'24/3'25
there hasn't been a better intrinsic 1500 run in the 43y since...
Orville, its an honour to read what you type.
Maybe an 800 or mile at Edwards Stadium at Berkeley?

Also, Keino beat Ryun at least twice: the final in Mexico City, and the heat in Munich.
