Started running again after a 30 year hiatus 3 years ago. I have been running 5k's up to 1/2 marathons. From the books I have read, reading the posts on this site and others, I can't seem to get faster. When I started 3 years ago I was running 10:30 minute miles I know brutally slow. Currently at 8:55. I run 50 MPW (long run on Saturday off on Sunday), tempo's, fartleks, some speed work on a track, try to run on trails and grass whenever possible to save my 52 year old knees. I have a couple of events coming up 20k in New Haven and the Hartford Half. Looking to get better and for me I know all you guys and gals are laughing at this point I am trying to get below 2 hours for these 2 events. I am looking for some decent, practical advice. I know it won't matter to a lot of you but from a personal standpoint running has saved my life, being an ex-junkie and running half-marathons is a big deal to me and I don't take it for granted... I should be in the ground. Thanks
