I don't think what you were doing fits into the barefoot trend that we're seeing right now. The things you were doing are drills that runners have been doing for a long, long time. I've seen pictures of runners from 40 years ago doing barefoot cool downs. Ten years ago I was doing barefoot drills with my high school team.
The new trend involves people who think they should go do their distances runs barefoot.
It's just as likely that you were getting looks from the joggers because you were going fast and doing drills they had never seen. I get a lot of looks when I'm doing my skips, bounds, high knees, etc., even when I have shoes on. It's more likely a result of the fact that I just passed them 15 times during the preceding track workout.
