You are right. Rodahl's 400m split was c.50,3. The camera angle was bad,but there were objects inside the track about
30-40m before and after the finnish line where you can measure how much Rodahl was behind Gray. At c.370m and 430m
point Rodahl was c.0,6-0,7 behind Gray. Gray's split was 49,55, so 50,2-50,3 is correct. But the last curve for Rodahl was less than optimal. Maybe c. 1,5m extra. The man,
who really ran extra meters was Tellez. Maybe as much as
6-7 meters.
Thanks for that. I used the same technique to work out his 400 split, for as you say, you don't get a clear side on angle as he goes through the bell.
Your estimation of 1.5m extra on the curve is also more accurate than Ventolin's findings. No way was it 3m!
Then again, even in a well paced circuit race, not all the athletes are going to run exactly 800m. Only the one that stays behind the rabbit and doesn't get over taken is going to run as close to 800 as possible. I think 2 or 3 extra metres in the course of a race is to be expected and reasonable.
In that race Rodahl ran no more than 3m extra over the entire race, something which would be reasonable in a circuit run. I think he was pretty close to his limit in Atlanta.
