Hi,
I am a long distance hs runner who is interested in finding out about SUNY Geneseo's cross country and track program. I was wondering if there is anyone on here who would know about it. I know the academics are good, but there are a few things I'd like to know about the track program before contacting the coach.
what kind of training do the long distance guys do? (mileage, workouts, do they have a history of burning out, etc.)
how serious is the team about running?
also, I heard the coach may be retiring. How soon and who will replace him?
any help would be appreciated!
I'm on the team.
Mileage - guys do anywhere from 45 - 100 miles a week. It's really up to you, depending on your event. 800/1500 guys run between 45 and 70 mpw, 5k/10k/steeple will be 60-100 mpw. Mileage is looked at as a progression, Woods won't make you run way more than you can handle freshman year.
Workouts - big emphasis on marathon pace/tempo workouts. Some intervals near the end of XC and during the end of indoor and into the outdoor season. 1-2 workouts a week.
Burning out - some freshman struggle when they come in since they aren't used to running mileage, or came from a very different system. By sophomore year, most people will improve. I ran about equal to what I did in HS my freshman year, then sophomore (this year) I've dropped about 15 secs off my HS 1600 time (if you convert from 1500) and 3 seconds off my 800. There's a great hard-working atmosphere on the team that really can get you through some initial rough patches.
Retirement - Woodsy isn't planning on going anywhere, anytime soon, so you don't have to worry about that.
Your times are definitely something that Coach Woods would be interested in, get in contact with him!
