It is distortive to put Bill Rodgers in this category. Everyone who has mentioned Bill, it has always been at some race/marathon expo that the race promoter flew him in for....TO MEET & GREET. Bill does 25-30 race weekends a year for many years already. I thinks he is pretty seasoned at chatting with mid-packers like you.
So lets leave Bill Rodgers off this List. It is his JOB to play/be the cool elite who will chat with everybody.
For the same reason let's leave Billy Mills, Frank Shorter, & Dick Beardsley off this list as well.
There are MANY deserving people already mentioned; Bill Rodgers is distortive.
While you do have a good point about athletes been "paid actors onstage" in a relaxed social setting with folks he chose to be with I found him to be very much the same as the public BR. When you meet him in diverse settings many times with folks he has known for 30 or more years you get to see the real Bill .
There seems to be legions of freckled faced towheaded kids that frame a Mean Joe Green moment as an insight to a runners soul. Ah the wonder of youth! Many years ago when the world was cool and Pluto was a planet I left my tablemates to say hello to a friend. She was sitting with a group that included a B-list actress. When I got back to the table one guy asked me if I got her autograph.
"Priorities my friend, after I asked her to have dinner with me tomorrow night I really did not think asking for her autograph would be the smartest move".
This is the biggest jock sniffing / bun hugger sniffing post that I have ever seen.
Stop being such suck ups - "Ritz was in the bathroom stall next to me, really stunk the place up and just let it fly - man that was so cool, he wiped his ass just like the rest of us ... not that I was watching"
Steve Payne. I think he once ran like 14:58 for 5k.

... so what are you doing on page 13 (other than getting pissed off)?
I disagree about Billy Mills being friendly because he's paid to do race gigs. I think the cause and effect runs the othr way. He's paid to do race gigs because he's inspiring.

I don't recall saying Billy Mills or Bill Rodgers were ONLY friendly just because they were being paid, but when they show up at a race which they are a paid goodwill ambassador for....I doubt you will find them to be aloof & elitist. They get that gig for being:
1) Great runners.
2) Approachable personalities.
3) Went to the Dean Kanarzes School of Marketing.

Rod Dixon. He will have a beer with anyone.
Eddy: spent time with him a few years ago after a race in W.Va. Watching this little guy walking around holding a case of beer was funny as hell.
Ken Martin: He was very talkative after a race. I thought he was a great guy then we were offered a few beers by one of my friends and Ken bitched that we didn't have any imports.
Bill Rodgers: everytime I've talked with him he's been a gentleman. Very nice guy.
