I've tried the powder and it may work.
Their are also beet pills that are easier to find and take.
Will the pills give the same result as mixing the powder?
There's a more recent study on beet juice and performance, this time using club level cyclist In time trials. They made a placebo of the beet juice by removing the nitrates. Their double blind study found a ~3% performance increase in the beet juice over the nitrate depleted juice.

I tried it, but it just made me sick to my stomach from the time that I drank it two hours before the race until a after I finished. Also, something I found out later is that straight beet juice can make your vocal chords seize up
