When people say "for all intensive purposes." They're trying to sound smart when they're really not. I hate that!!! Doh!

Let me be clear.....
Don't add words, work on removing them. Most people think they sound smarter by sounding wordy. Work on removing all the words that you can. Be simple and direct. The object is to get the point across, not sound a certain way.

Take your own advice, my friend. How about:
Do not be overly wordy in your communications, instead aim to keep them simple and on target.
Saw this one on a message board a few weeks ago:
pre-madonna
So many punchlines, so little time.
it is not the words, but rather the order of words that allow one to "sound" intelligent.
so, talk like yoda.
no, not really, i was just joking with the yoda reference.
if no one can understand what you're trying to say, then you are the fool.
irregardless bothers the poop out of me.
don't get me started with disirregardless...i heard someone say this once, i corrected him by saying don't you mean irregardless. he said yes yes irregardless. i chuckled, then cried a little bit. but hey, no one is perfect.

That's still pretty verbose. How about:
Communicate simply and directly.
or
Keep it short and sweet.

and putting imho at the end of your sentence in all caps makes you even smarter.

Agree. Abbreviating for chat rooms and texting is killing grammar in schools. Some of my nieces and nephews can not spell when I receive emails from them.
This reminds me of the time I read that Dane-o's blog. Puffed with huge reaches for glossary terms and nauseatingly self-centered.

It's not what you asked, but one sure way to signal a lack of intelligence is to use a bunch of words which plainly fall outside the domain of your ordinary vocabulary. You might as well try to sound fast by claiming a 12:26 PR.

Eschew obfuscation.
Anyone remember National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon with the Hannibal Lector scene?
"Quid Pro Quo."
"What does that mean?"
"It means I'm being pretentious."
I've found animal references to entail a certain level of intelligence (not saying to what level.)
“There’s more than one way to skin a cat.”
“…ducks on a pond.”
“Tail wagging the dog.”
“A leopard can’t change his spots.”
“Winnie the Pooh and Tigger too!”
Ok, so maybe the last one was a vestige of my youthful nature but, someone tell me that these tools wouldn’t make anyone sound profoundly intelligent.
Esoteric.
