yes, exactly.to the people saying getting to work is more important - wtf. some people have to get to work at 2am, does that mean they should be blowing snow at 1am - then everyone else's workday is screwed up because nobody else in the neighborhood sleptas someone else said - most places have ordinances against this sort of thing. they are there for a reason.

I used to have to leave for work at around 5am and on snowy days I would SHOVEL the driveway instead of using my snowblower. Just because I have to get up that early doesn't mean I should wake the neighborhood.
Yes it was more backbreaking, but at that hour it is just inconsiderate to used the blower. It doesn't matter if you have to be to work early. Get up a little earlier and shovel yourself out. As someone else said, check your local noise ordinances and I'm sure 7am is the absolute earliest you can use such equipment.

Good point. For that matter, I would like all city snoplows banned from my street overnight. Those plows make a ton of noise as they scrap along the road clearing the streets.
You're probably the same guy that would complain if you had to walk on a sidewalk that wasn't cleared.
perhaps since there are laws for that too...is it really that hard? no snowblowing before 7am, sidewalk must be cleared -it is called a shovel

What should we do in case of a fire at your neighbor's house at 4am - no clattery ladders, or loud walkie talkies?
yeah because that is the same thing

Last summer I was finishing my morning run and some guy was out mowing his lawn at a similar time. I asked the same question to the Letsrun crowd that you did, only refering to lawn mowers.
The responses were very similar. 8:00 seems to be an acceptable time for mowers or snow blowers.
Someone said maybe the guy was getting back at neighbors who kept him up all night with their partying.
Yes, I am over analyzing this, but...
One can mow almost any time, if you wait a day or 2 more hours it is not much of a difference. You blow based on mother natures schedule (within reason), if you wait too long the drive may not be passable, or if you drive over the snow it gets compacted and icy. He may be anal about the driveway.
The neighbor is out of line (mildly, but no big deal) I would let it go.
I suppose if I lived in my parent's basement, played dungeons and dragons all afternoon, and talked to girls on Facebook, getting up early to clear the driveway and sidewalks wouldn't be an issue.
How about this....I'll give you $20 to shovel my driveway and sidewalk, and then you don't have to worry about me waking you up before 7:00 you lazy ass. It'll be the most money you make all week.
No, your neighbor was not being rude. If 5:45 am is the only time he can clear the driveway before he heads off to work, then that's something you will have to learn to deal with. Not everyone has the luxury of waiting until 7 am since many are heading off to work at that time.
Perhaps you could make your neighbor a deal that if he skips using the snowblower in the morning, you and the kiddies would shovel it for him before he gets home.
I shovel at 1-2 am and worry I'm making too much noise when my shovel hits the driveway. I live right next to neighbors.

You're a f***ing idiot. There's a real good chance that the town has noise ordinances that preclude using equipment such as snowblowers and lawn mowers prior to a certain time very likely to be later than 5:45am. Try that in the neighborhood I grew up in and the neighbors wouldn't even bother to put their bathrobe on before they aimed and fired.

I gotta say I was mildly irritated. But mainly because our 4 and 6 year old were awoken almost 2 hours before they normally rise for the day.

While I understand your point, you seem to overlook the fact that I earlier mentioned he runs the friggin' thing 11:30PM on a Friday. I don't know about ordinances because we live in a township but no one else in the neighborhood was running one and I shoveled the area by the garage so as not to make noise. I waited until after 7:00 to run the snow thrower (300' driveway, neighbors too).
Funny thing is that he and his wife were the first to complain to the zoning committee when a guy with 5 acres 2 houses from them had a rooster crowing at daybreak.
Don't get me wrong, it is nice having a compulsive neighbor and as I said, we do get along well. Like me, he has a laptop and has the luxury of going in a little later if he chooses to work from home.

That's because your apartment complex maintenance man is paid to clear the snow, einstein.
no, maybe it's because he's not a lazy fatass like you. I live in MN and know plenty of people who still shovel. I live in a condo now so it's not a problem for me, but my parents have a fairly large three car driveway and still shovel. Why pay to join a gym, and then pay to give up a workout at home?
can't we all just get along???
Ha. That made me laugh. You could not be more wrong. I clear more in a week than most people make in a year - happy to start talking finance anytime you want.

Oh no he didn'
Maybe he had to get to work?
1. Put tarp in driveway.
2. Go to sleep.
3. Wake up.
4. Move tarp with snow on it to the side.
5. Drive free.
