2009 White Rock Marathon
Time: Approximately 2:58:15.
Why approximately? BECAUSE I'M NOT ON THE FRICKIN' RESULTS. My wife got split updates on me through Mile 24 (the last checkpoint), so I know my chip/tag was working. My guess is the finish line mat missed it, which I guess is probably the one to miss because they'll have pictures of me. In any event, I've emailed the race director, the results guy, and the timing company to fix this. I'm going to throw a (bigger) fit if they don't update marathonguide.com -- I work with a number of runners, and they check when you say you ran a particular time and will think I'm a liar if I don't show up on marathonguide.
As for the race, I didn't keep my splits. Here's a general overview of the high points.
Weather: Nice. High 40s to high 50s during the race, foggy to start, cloudy at the end. Wind was manageable.
Mile 1: Lots o' people. Only about 20% of them are doing the marathon. That was a lot of effort for a 6:30ish mile.
Mile 4: Hmm, I've settled down nicely into 6:40 pace. The first 6 are net uphill about 180 feet, so I'm maybe even a little fast. Still crowded. Let me look around to see if I can find a marathoner to tag along with. Look left, look right. Hey, what's that cone doing right in front of me?!? I'll have to straddle it! Oh no, I can't keep my balance! BARREL ROLL! Some nice kids pick me up without breaking stride. Really nice guys. Miraculously, I'm OK -- small scratch on my chin and a sore left hand. Still run right at 6:40 over the hilly mile.
10k: 40:10 split. Definitely too fast on the uphill first part. Crap. Try to back off a bit. Also time for a gel. Talk to a couple of guys from Shreveport who say that they're only goal is sub-3:00.
Mile 9: 59:48. Slowed down a bit to low 6:40s on a downhill/flat section. Hopefully this will save me for the last miles. This is also where the 9.5 loop around the lake starts -- it will be good to see how fast I can do it. My record is 56 minutes, which won't happen. But my next best time is 66 minutes, which might. One of the Shreveport guys peels off to potty. Don't see him again. The other one speeds up a bit.
Mile 10: 1:06:24. Right at 6:40 pace, but not in a good way. Too fast uphill, too slow on the downhill/flat. Starting to feel the effort. Lost contact with the guy from Shreveport, and the low-to-mid 2:50s guys are pulling by me.
Halfway: 1:26:08. Cool, that's my second fastest HM ever! Wait, I've got to run another 13.1. That's not so cool. Backside of the lake means the wind is picking up. This is kind of early to feel this crappy.
Mile 14: OK, I feel a little better after a gel. Still in the low 6:40s.
Mile 15: No I don't! The math starts. If I run 8:00 miles from here on out, what will I finish at? 3:09 or so? Crap.
Mile 19: Coming out from the lake. Did the loop in around 64 minutes. New second-best! Still aound 6:50 pace. But here come the hills. Crap, crap, and double crap.
Mile 21.5: They're called the Dolly Partons -- about 150 feet climb in 1.5 miles. It's kind of misleading. There's no real hill, just a steady uphill for a mile or so. I manage Mile 20 (all uphill) in 7:19, right what I was shooting for. The math tells me that at Mile 22, I'll be to the point where 8 minute miles will get me sub-3:00. Which is good, because after 21+ miles and a climb, my legs are shot. Guys I'm running with are waddling. I suspect I am too. Pretty much give up on sub-2:55 at this point.
Mile 22: You know, I haven't had any GI issues. That UltraFuel carb load really did the trick.
Mile 22.5: Jinx! Get the rumbling right after the mile mark. Pressure builds quickly. Learning from my experience at Chicago, I stop at the first set of Port-a-potties I see. Bathroom stop takes 48 seconds, so I'm back to the point where 8:00 miles won't get me sub-3:00. It's bloody, but I feel OK. Back on the road. Only one guy has passed me.
Mile 23: More than one guy passes me. Dudes that picked me up at Mile 4 fly by. I don't mind so much.
Mile 24: 2:43:05. 8:00 miles will get me 2:59! Oh wait, it's 26.2, not 26. Which at 8:00 will be... 3:00:40. Crap.
Mile 24.1: I pass the guy from Shreveport. He's walking. I pat him on the shoulder as I pass and tell him that he'll break 3:00 if he just keeps running. According to the results he finished in 3:00:40 or so, his friend in 3:01.
Mile 25: 2:40 low. 8:00 pace will put me under 3:00 for sure at this point, so I relax a bit. Really hot relay girl in a red bodysuit flies by. Nice. Only problem is that she's going too fast to enjoy the view for long.
Finish: 2:58:15 on my watch. I know I'm around 40th place (exactly 40 it appears ONCE THEY GET THE F'ING RESULTS RIGHT), so I hit my top 50 goal. I get a nice Top 100 finisher Legs are dead but OK for the first 5 minutes. Dead and not OK after that. Stupid 2:00+ half marathoners are clogging up the lines for food and beer, so I skip that. Parents parked a mile away. That wlak sucked.
Takeaways: GI issues again late in the race, so next time I'll do the carb load more than a day in advance in case that's it. I lost close to a minute at the bathroom stop. Going out in 1:26 low was a mistake, especially because the way it was paced (fast on the uphill, slow on the downhill) it was a hard 1:26 low. I suspect that if I had been closer to 1:27:30, especially properly paced, I could have saved myself a minute or two in the second half. Figure 1:30, plus the bathroom stop, and I'm looking at 2:55 high. Makes sense.
