Sure bootsie, you could eat 2000 Calories worth of Carrots and get ~50g protein. But you'd also get ~500g carbohydrates. Not to mention the amino acid profile of a carrot cannot hold a candle to that of an egg.
Most everything does have protein in it, but it's the ratio of carbs:protein:fat that matters. Most researchers agree that serious athletes need anywhere from 1.0 - 1.5 g protein/kg bodyweight per day. So a 75kg athlete (165lbs) would need anywhere from 75 - 113 grams protein per day. To obtain this from carrots alone, the athlete would have to comsume 3000 - 4000 Calories and 750-1000 g carbohydrates. That's a 92% carbohydrate diet!
I know, I've taken your idea and expolited it, made it ridiculous... But my point is, by combining fewer carrots with a piece of meat your ratios of carb:protein:fat would be much more favorable.
Well, I never actually suggested that one eat only carrots... merely that the notion that protein is only found in animal sources is absurd. If anything, Americans eat far too much protein, which stresses the kidneys, and in all likelihood, contributes to the astronomical rates of osteoporosis we have here. You are correct that athletes need more protein than non-athletes, but it's incredibly easy to get a varied number of proteins from non-animal sources. I've been doing it for 20 years, run everything from 800 meters through the marathon.... no major injuries or illnesses. I ain't that fast, but that's not a fault of my diet.
