Well, if anyone listened to the news or radio this morning and heard the voicemail, it was definitely Tiger.
Cheating on your pregnant wife = No more endorsements

I'm not one to respect people who have affairs, but damn, it sure seems that more people than not do, and this type of thing has been in the news constantly and is just ho-hum. Steve Phillips was fired, but he had the affair with a low-level employee, AND he's not Tiger Woods. Sorry, but Tiger Woods doesn't need to make another penny off a sponsor ever, and golf tournaments will still drool all over him.
Tiger Woods won't be DONE until he's in the ground. He's more important to his "sport" than any athlete has ever been to any other sport.
please, he is not done - just human.
Tiger would be fine even if he never gets another endorsement deal. He can live comfortably forever off what he has already earned and can still earn prize money on top of that.
It's a bigger blow to the companies and the charities.
Maybe Buick is done.
I live in Gainesville, FL. We get two TV channels out of Orlando. All this shit was not just the lead story on both channels every night since it happened, it has consumed the "news" coverage of both channels. Anchors "reporting" the big findings, on-site reporters showing the tire tracks in the grass leading to the fire hydrant, helicopter pictures of the massacred lawn. All with such serious stern faces. HO LEE SHIT! Get the hell over it. It truly is an eye-opening display of how disgraceful our main stream media outlets have become. Tabloid bullshit passes as the shocking monumental lead story nearly every night now. Meanwhile, the stories that actually mean something to people's lives, like what the city commission decided to do with bus service routes in a certain part of town get about 15 seconds right after sports and everyone is "laughing" at the good joke the sportsguy said.
Bill Clinton, David Letterman, John Edwards, Michael Jordan, John F. Kennedy, Elliot Spitzer, Newt Gingrich, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Bruce Springsteen, Prince Charles, Princess Diana, Hugh Grant, Donald Trump, Bradd Pitt, Jude Law, LeAnn Rimes, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Madge Simpson...the list is long.
So Tiger Woods is now on the list. Big deal. He's wrong to cheat, but he's not any more wrong than any no name person who is sitting at home watching him on TV.
So Tiger Woods cheats on his wife just like everyone else. Why would that hurt his reputation so much?

Tiger is more than the greatest golfer ever, he is (was?) a true sportsman. His quest for excellence and his personality made him someone millions of people admire.
Now, he has admitted that he has betrayed the most important person in his life, his wife. Are we so hardened that we think, "No big deal"?
He is still the greatest golfer ever and a sportsman, but his reputation has suffered. He will always be remembered (along with the long list someone else posted) as someone who cheated on his wife. This says more about his integrity and honor than size of his bank account or how many championships he wins. I still admire him for his golf skill and good he does through his foundation etc, but all the money and fame in the world are not worth cheating on someone you promised to be faithful. to.
Marge Simpson?!!?!
Really?
Yeah, I did her
food is done. people are finished.
yeah, marge is a ho allright!!!! I did her from behind....I also got it on with wilma, that b1tch is fine!!!!
Someone already has his name is Phil Knight.
"Maybe Buick is done."
Tiger hasn't been sponsored by Buick for quite a while.
My coach doesn't cheat on his wife. He is very pure.
you do realise that over 70% of the voters on espn(all 50 states) voted no on a poll very similar to this. cant remember what it was exactly and cant find the link on espns site. believe it was one of yesterdays polls if anyone would like to try and find it.
I guess my point is really that people are stupid to give a damn at all, even stupider for assuming that his public image was a reflection of his real character, and even stupider yet for being suprised that he would cheat on a woman who was nowhere near his level in terms of power and popularity. His wife is a model who has nothing to her credit except her looks. Do people really think that one of the greatest athletes in the world has so much respect for a boring, talentless fake blonde like his wife that he would never cheat? Did we not learn from Michael Jordan how the world really works on the level that men like them live on? Christ. No rational person would be suprised or care about the revelation that Tiger Woods cheats on his wife.

Thanks for playing. Try again.

Golf is a sport and golfers are athletes. What Tiger does requires a literally superhuman degree of kinesthetic intelligence and a person with the same genetic gifts also has the potential to excel in sports other than golf. He is a great athlete, better than any active runner or track athlete save for Usain Bolt.
marij:
Good post. You've inflected my understanding of the situation.
I'm no big follower of Tiger's. I don't play golf. I've watched him in the final round several times on TV. I've followed his career in a vague way. I realize that he's arguably the greatest golfer who has ever lived and makes some sick shots that my few golfing friends can't believe.
I think what surprises and perhaps saddens me is that he seemed like a guy who actually was an exception to the rule. He seemed to have married well, and to have have been happy in that marriage. (She wasn't a feminist/intellectual, like Jay Leno's wife, but it still seemed like a good marriage.) More than that, Tiger seemed liked a guy who really DID have everything together. He knew how to win. He knew how to manage his career. He knew how to mourn and honor his dad. He didn't let the "race thing" disable him or distract him. He'd ruffled some African American feathers when he defined himself, notably, as CaBlInAsian (Cablinasian: Caucasian/Black/Indian/Asian), but he'd weathered that ideological storm pretty gracefully. He was a golf-banging, money-making machine. Or so we all thought.
Turns out he's just another spoiled top-end athlete whose self-control was masking a deeper loss of control.
He was a fool: that's what's shocking. Did he really think you could do what he seems to have done and keep it secret forever? That's.....silly. That's not how the world works.
He looked like a guy, one of the few, who'd figured out how to make the world his toy and get every last thing he wanted out of life. I guess not. Or maybe he did get to live out a few fantasies, but now he's going to pay the price--and there surely will be a price.
Kobe managed to weather the storm and rehabilitate himself, but that was about one night in a hotel. This is apparently about several woman and a several-year affair in which a great deal of passion was invested, all while his pregnant wife was languishing at home.
The brand has been tarnished. It's as though the secret ingredient in Coke turned out to be....cigarette butts swept up off the streets around Times Square.
